Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Queen

Six months later.
The music drifting across the grand terrace of the Ferrante estate was soft, acoustic Italian guitar, mixing with the gentle rustle of summer leaves and the distant lapping of the lake against the private beach below.
The estate looked completely different than it had on the freezing autumn morning I had first driven through its gates. The dark, imposing curtains had been replaced with airy white linen, fresh flowers bloomed in stone urns across the courtyard, and the sound of childish laughter echoed through the vaulted corridors.
Isla, now fourteen months old and running everywhere on chubby, energetic legs, squealed with delight as she chased a golden retriever puppy across the manicured lawn.
Sitting on a low stone wall nearby, Luca watched her, a soft, genuine smile playing on his lips—a smile that no one in Chicago’s underworld had ever seen him wear. He had traded his tactical armor and dark suits for a casual white linen shirt and rolled-up trousers, looking utterly at peace.
I walked out onto the terrace holding two glasses of freshly squeezed lemonade. I wore a light sundress of buttercup yellow, my hair loose around my shoulders, feeling the warm summer breeze kiss my skin.
My life was no longer an endless nightmare of unpaid rent, overdue notices, and cheap club lights. With Luca’s support, I had officially founded the Isla Hope Foundation—a non-profit organization dedicated to providing safe housing, legal defense, and childcare for single mothers escaping domestic abuse and predatory debts across the Midwest.
The forty-two million dollars recovered from Connor and Dante had been legally re-routed, with a significant portion funding the foundation’s endowments. The rest of Connor Walsh’s empire had been completely liquidated, erasing every trace of his existence from our lives forever.
""She’s getting faster,"" Luca said, wrapping his arm naturally around my waist as I reached his side, pressing a kiss against the side of my temple.
""She gets her stubbornness from me,"" I teased, leaning into his solid, comforting warmth. ""And her ability to cause absolute chaos from you.""
Luca chuckled, the deep, rich sound vibrating against my ribs. ""A lethal combination. The syndicate won't stand a chance when she takes over in twenty years.""
I laughed, setting the glasses on the stone table, turning around to face him. I reached up, tracing the faint white scar running through his left eyebrow with the tip of my finger. He leaned into my touch, closing his eyes for a moment, savoring the simple tenderness of a woman who loved him not for his empire or his power, but for the man he was when the doors were closed.
""You know,"" I whispered, ""six months ago, I was dancing for twenty-dollar bills, praying I wouldn't wake up in an alley.""
Luca opened his amber eyes, looking down at me with an intensity so fierce, so devoted, that it stole the breath straight from my lungs. He reached into his trouser pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.
My heart stopped.
He didn't drop to his knees like a prince in a fairy tale. He stood before me like a king, opening the box to reveal a flawless, cushion-cut emerald ring surrounded by a halo of glittering diamonds—the exact deep green of the dress I had worn the night we conquered the Drake.
""You danced to keep your daughter alive, Mara,"" Luca said, his voice husky with raw emotion. ""And every night I watched you, I realized that I had spent my entire life building an empire of stone, only to find the one thing worth living for dancing in the dark.""
He took my hand, his thumb stroking my knuckles.
""Rule this city with me. Not as my assistant. Not as an asset. As my wife, my partner, and the mother of our family.""
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy blurred my vision. I looked past his shoulder to where Isla was giggling, tumbling into the soft grass with the puppy, completely safe, completely free.
May you like
""Yes,"" I choked out, a brilliant smile breaking across my face. ""A thousand times, yes.""
Luca slipped the ring onto my finger, pulled me flush against his chest, and kissed me under the golden summer sun—sealing a future that was no longer bought with fear, but forged in unbreakable love."
