Chapter 3 - The Enemy at the Table

Luca didn't stand up. He didn't raise his voice. He merely took a slow sip of his bourbon and placed the crystal glass onto the side table with a faint, deliberate click.
""You enter my private study without knocking again, Dante, and you won't leave with the hands you used to turn the handle,"" Luca said calmly.
Dante’s jaw twitched, but he didn't back down. He was shorter than Luca, wiry, with sunken cheeks and manic eyes that spoke of excessive cocaine use and deep-seated paranoia. ""The five families are meeting at the Drake Hotel on Friday, cousin. Uncle Vittorio is dead, and the seat at the head of the table isn't legally yours until the ledgers balance. You’ve been hiding Walsh’s accomplice right under our noses!""
""Mara is not an accomplice. She was the blind,"" Luca countered, his voice chilling the room by ten degrees. ""Connor Walsh forged her identity while managing your dock manifests. manifests that you were personally supposed to oversee, Dante.""
Dante’s face flushed crimson. ""She has the offshore keys! Walsh couldn't have executed the Delaware transfers without an authorized biological key. Her thumbprint is on the encrypted flash drive Connor left in the safe deposit box!""
I froze. My thumbprint?
My mind flashed back to eight months ago. A week before Connor vanished, he had brought home a new set of life insurance papers and a high-tech digital notary scanner. Just standard biometric verification for our family policy, babe, he had said, kissing my temple while pressing my thumb against a sleek black USB device.
""He used a biometric bypass,"" I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical blow. ""He scanned my thumb under the guise of an insurance policy.""
Dante laughed bitterly. ""Hear that? A fairy tale! The Commission won't buy it, Luca. Deliver her to the warehouse on 35th Street by tomorrow morning for proper questioning, or I tell the Council that you've compromised the entire syndicate for a pair of pretty legs.""
Luca stood up then. It wasn't a sudden movement, but the sheer physical presence of the man swallowed the entire room. He walked over to Dante, towering over his cousin, his expression empty of everything except pure, lethal promise.
""If anyone from your crew comes within fifty yards of this woman or her child,"" Luca said, barely above a whisper, ""I will dismantle your operation brick by brick and feed you to the stray dogs on the South Side. Mara is under my personal protection. She answers to me. She speaks to me. And if you ever bring your street trash into my home again, Dante, blood relation won't save you.""
Dante held Luca's gaze for three agonizing seconds, his chest heaving, before spitting on the hardwood floor and spinning on his heel. His enforcers followed him out, their heavy boots echoing down the corridor.
When the heavy doors clicked shut, the silence returned, suffocating and terrifying.
I was trembling so violently I had to grab the edge of the desk to keep from falling. ""He's going to kill us, isn't he? He's going to tell them I stole their money, and they’re going to come for Isla.""
Luca turned back to me. His face softened—just a fraction, but to me, it was like a burst of sunlight through a storm cloud. He walked over and placed both hands on my shoulders, his grip warm, solid, and completely unyielding.
""Nobody touches your daughter, Mara. Look at me.""
I forced my eyes up to his amber gaze.
""I have spent ten years building this empire from the dirt up,"" Luca said fiercely. ""I did not survive bullets, betrayals, and federal indictments to let a sniveling coward like Connor Walsh or an idiot like Dante dictate my terms. You have five days until the Drake meeting. You and I are going to find those offshore accounts, crack the encryption, and bring the proof to the Council. You trust me?""
May you like
""I don't trust anyone with a gun, Luca,"" I choked out, a single tear spilling over my cheek.
He wiped the tear away with the pad of his thumb, his skin rough against mine. ""Then trust the man who has nothing to gain from letting you die.""
