Chapter 7 - Public Humiliation

Unable to contain the poison coursing through him, Grant broke from the shadows.
"Evelyn!" his voice cracked across the front tables during a pause in her speech. "Tell them the truth!"
Gasps rippled across the room. Several security officers immediately moved, but Evelyn raised a calm hand, halting them.
Grant pushed his way past a table of stunned hedge-fund managers. His suit was rumpled, his tie crooked, and his eyes bloodshot with exhaustion and fury.
"Tell them how you built your empire on lies!" Grant shouted, pointing an accusing finger at the stage. "Tell them how you deceived your own husband for seven years! You acted like a docile little housewife while you hoarded billions! You set me up to be fired! You ruined my reputation and tossed me onto the street like trash!"
The guests murmured in shock, turning their cameras and smartphones toward Grant. Whispers of recognition broke out among the financial executives in attendance.
Evelyn didn't flinch. She stepped down from the podium and walked slowly to the edge of the stage, looking down at him with an expression not of anger, but of utter, devastating pity.
"I never hoarded anything, Grant," she spoke into the wireless lapel microphone, her voice echoing clearly throughout the magnificent hall. "When we married, you told me that your dream was security. You told me you wanted a home filled with peace, free from the stress of debt."
"You made a fool out of me!" Grant yelled back.
"No, Grant. You made a fool of yourself the moment you decided that success meant cruelty," Evelyn said, her voice steady and resonant. "I hid my wealth at first because your pride was too fragile to handle an equal. And then I kept quiet because I wanted to see who you truly were when you thought you had power."
She gestured toward the room full of influential leaders.
"You spent seven years mocking my interests, belittling my character, and taking credit for corporate maneuvers you lacked the intelligence to execute. And on the night you thought you had finally reached the mountaintop, you handed me a divorce petition over an anniversary cake and told me I was dead weight."
The crowd turned their eyes toward Grant, their expressions shifting from surprise to profound disgust.
"You didn't fall because of me, Grant," Evelyn finished softly. "You fell because your arrogance wrote checks your talent could never cash."
Two Chicago police officers stepped up behind Grant, pinning his arms firmly behind his back.

"Let go of me!" Grant thrashed weakly, but the grip on him was absolute.
As he was dragged out backward through the grand doors, the entire ballroom erupted into deafening, sustained applause for Evelyn. Grant caught one final glimpse of her turning gracefully back to the microphone, leaving him behind forever in the dark.
