Chapter 2 - The View from the Peak

The sixty-fourth floor of the Northstar Meridian Tower overlooked Lake Michigan like a fortress of glass and polished obsidian. By eight-thirty the following morning, Grant Mercer was already pacing the executive boardroom, smoothing his designer silk tie and rehearsing his cadence in the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Behind him sat Martin Wallace, the aging CEO of Halcyon Vertex, wiping nervous sweat from his brow.

"Calm down, Grant," Martin muttered, adjusting his glasses. "We haven't cleared the wire transfer yet. If Northstar’s principal partner finds discrepancies in our international licensing clauses, this buyout could stall."

"Stop fretting, Martin," Grant replied smoothly, flashing the practiced, predatory smile he reserved for television interviews. "Julian Vance’s representatives have signed off on every preliminary audit. I’ve personally vetted the transitional roadmap. When Vance arrives, he’s going to realize that I am the sole indispensable asset on our payroll. Once the ink dries, that EVP title is mine. I practically engineered this entire windfall."

Grant glanced casually at his personal phone. No text from Evelyn. He sneered under his breath. She was probably curled up on their sofa in tears, desperately calculating how to stretch four thousand dollars a month. Let her cry. Great men required ruthless sacrifices, and he was finally ascending to the corporate pantheon.

The double mahogany doors swung wide at precisely 8:58 AM.

A vanguard of five senior corporate attorneys entered, followed by Marcus Cole, the fearsome Chief Operating Officer of Northstar Meridian. Every person in the room rose immediately to their feet. Grant stepped forward, his right hand extended, projecting absolute executive dominance.

"Mr. Cole, an absolute pleasure," Grant beamed. "On behalf of Halcyon Vertex, we are honored to cement this partnership. We look forward to greeting Mr. Julian Vance shortly."

Marcus Cole looked down at Grant’s outstretched hand, made no move to shake it, and walked straight past him to the head of the boardroom table.

"Mr. Vance is not attending today," Marcus said, pulling a leather binder from his briefcase. "In fact, there is no Julian Vance. That moniker was merely an institutional blind trust designation established during our initial public carve-out."

Grant paused, his hand lingering awkwardly in the air before he slowly pulled it back. "A blind trust? Then who holds the ninety-eight percent controlling stake in Northstar?"

"The founder and sole owner," Marcus replied, gesturing toward the open doorway. "And she prefers to handle multi-million-dollar signatures personally."

High heels clicked rhythmically against the Italian marble flooring outside.

A woman walked into the boardroom.

She wore a bespoke ivory wool suit, tailored to absolute perfection. Her auburn hair was swept up with diamond pins, and her gaze was as sharp and frigid as Arctic ice. Two junior analysts trailed behind her, carrying binders embossed with the golden Northstar seal.

Grant felt the air leave his lungs in a violent, dizzying rush. His knees went weak against the edge of the conference table.

"Evelyn?" Grant whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood.

May you like

She didn't glance his way. She pulled out the high-backed leather chair at the absolute apex of the room, sat down, and folded her hands over the master contract.

"Good morning, gentlemen," Evelyn said, her tone cutting through the room like a scalpel. "Let’s discuss the purchase of Halcyon Vertex."
