Chapter 3 - The True Architect

The silence inside the boardroom was deafening. Grant stood frozen, his eyes wide with disbelief, staring at the woman he had belittled over breakfast for the past seven years.

"What... what is this?" Grant stammered, looking frantically around the room at his colleagues. "Martin, what kind of sick joke is this? Evelyn, get out of that chair! How did you even get past security downstairs? Do you have any idea what building this is?"

"Sit down, Mr. Mercer," Marcus Cole warned, his voice booming with legal venom. "You are speaking to Evelyn Vance-Mercer, Founder, CEO, and Principal Shareholder of Northstar Meridian Capital. You will address her with proper decorum, or security will physically remove you from the premises."

Martin Wallace went pale as a sheet. "Evelyn... Mrs. Mercer? You... you're the owner? You founded Northstar?"

"I did, Martin," Evelyn replied calmly, resting her elbows on the armrests. "Ten years ago, operating out of a tiny office in River North. While my husband was telling his friends that I wrote lifestyle newsletters from our spare bedroom, I was structuring venture debt and acquiring commercial real estate across three continents."

Grant’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson. "You lied to me! You lived in my house, ate my food, and watched me work eighty-hour weeks while you kept hundreds of millions hidden like a thief!"

"Your house?" Evelyn raised a single, arched eyebrow. "Grant, the Lincoln Park townhouse was purchased outright through an LLC owned by my holding company. You paid the utility bills and thought you were supporting us. You called my private consulting a 'cute hobby.' Every time I attempted to discuss high-level finance, you interrupted to lecture me on market basics you read on morning blogs."

"I am the lead negotiator on this merger!" Grant shouted, losing all executive poise. "You can’t just walk in here and pull a stunt like this! Halcyon wouldn't even be standing here without my blood and sweat!"

Evelyn opened the master file in front of her. "On the contrary, Grant. You almost wrecked this acquisition twice. In June, you artificially inflated your European market forecasts by forty percent. My team caught it and quietly restructured the debt allocation to keep the SEC from launching an investigation into Halcyon. In September, you insulted the Japanese syndicate lenders over an email chain because you couldn't understand foreign exchange hedging. I personally spent three days smoothing that over while you were in Miami boasting about your golf swing."

She looked directly into his panicked eyes.

"You didn't save this deal, Grant. You were the liability I spent fourteen months shielding."

Grant sank into an empty chair, clutching the edge of the table. His mind raced back to the thousands of times he had mocked her casual clothes, her garden, her silence. Every condescending lecture he had given her echoed in his skull like a mocking chorus.

"Now," Evelyn said, turning her attention to Martin Wallace. "We have the closing documents. But before Northstar Meridian releases the first tranche of eight hundred and forty million dollars, there is a personnel matter Halcyon must rectify."

Grant’s heart lurched into his throat. He leaned forward, desperate panic washing over him. "Evelyn... please. Let's talk about this privately. We’re husband and wife."
