Chapter 6 - The Public Execution

Blake was the first to spot me, his smirk faltering as his gaze dropped to the team of suited attorneys following in my wake.
"Dad," Blake whispered, tugging his father's sleeve. "Look."
Edward turned around, his confident smile freezing on his face as our eyes met across the crowded floor. He quickly recovered his composure, adjusting his lapels and stepping forward with an outstretched hand, prepared to play the role of the forgiving father for the surrounding spectators.
"Abigail, darling," Edward said smoothly, his voice carrying over the quieted crowd. "I'm glad you came to your senses. We have a private conference room booked upstairs where our legal counsel can finalize the transfer documents."
I didn't take his hand.
I stopped three feet in front of him, letting the heavy silence of the ballroom settle over the entire room like lead.
"I won't be signing any transfer documents, Edward," I announced clearly, my voice resonating off the crystal chandeliers with razor-sharp authority.
My mother gasped softly, stepping forward. "Abigail, lower your voice! Do not cause a scene in front of our friends!"
"The scene was caused last Saturday morning," I said, signaling Tobias, who stood near the audio-visual booth across the mezzanine.
Suddenly, the large dual projector screens that had been displaying the gala’s philanthropic sponsors flickered to life.
A high-definition image of Morse Development Group's internal security badge log materialized on the screens, highlighting Keycard ID #001 entering the building at 9:04 AM on the exact morning the defamatory memo had been authored.
The entire ballroom gasped in unison.

Whispers erupted around the room like a sudden crack of thunder.
Edward’s face turned an ashen shade of gray, his jaw tightening into a grotesque, panicked knot.
