Chapter 10 - The Road Finally Traveled

Six months later, the sweet scent of southern magnolias drifted through the warm evening air outside my home.

I sat on the wide stone terrace of my new country estate just outside Chapel Hill, watching the sunset paint the sky in deep shades of amber and violet. Beside me sat Marcus Vance, reviewing the preliminary rollout data for Meridian’s nationwide deployment across three hundred new medical facilities.

"We just hit ninety-eight percent hospital retention," Marcus smiled, raising his coffee mug in a silent toast. "Your platform is saving lives every single hour, Abigail."

"That was always the only thing that mattered," I said, smiling genuinely as I took a slow sip of tea.

My phone chimed softly on the cedar table.

It was a letter forwarded from my mother's attorney. She had moved into a quiet condo in Raleigh, living off a modest independent annuity, finally free from the toxic vanity that had poisoned her marriage for decades. She wrote to apologize for the years of silence and asked if we could meet for lunch next month without expectations.

I typed back a brief, kind message: I'd like that. Let's start over slowly.

As for Edward, his trial was scheduled for the autumn, facing up to fifteen years in federal prison for wire fraud and estate embezzlement. He had tried to call me repeatedly from the county detention center, but his number had long been blocked.

I stood up and walked down the stone steps toward the lush green lawn, breathing in the deep, sweet tranquility of true freedom.

They had spent my entire life trying to convince me that I was a failure because I didn't fit into their narrow, selfish mold.

They had mocked my dreams, sabotaged my work, and attempted to rob me of my future.

Yet here I stood—independent, victorious, and surrounded by the empire I had built with my own hands.

The road less traveled had been brutal, lonely, and covered in thorns.

But standing beneath the open sky, watching the stars begin to illuminate the Carolina night, I knew with absolute certainty that every single step had brought me home.
