Chapter 1 - The Badge That Shattered Everything

The digital badge log on my laptop screen glared back at me in cold, merciless monochrome.

I had braced myself to see my brother Blake’s name, expecting his usual reckless arrogance and sloppy jealousy. Instead, the bold letters etched beside Keycard ID #001 read: Edward Morse – Chief Executive Officer.

My own father had swiped into the executive suite at 9:04 on a Saturday morning.

He hadn't assigned a junior staffer or outsourced the smear campaign to some shadowy online reputation burner. Edward Morse had personally climbed the steps to his glass-walled penthouse office, drafted the fraudulent memo accusing my startup of criminal fraud, and routed it through his firm’s encrypted internal server.

"Abigail, you still there?" Tobias's voice buzzed through my speakerphone, cutting through the ringing in my ears.

"I'm here," I whispered, gripping the edge of my granite kitchen island until my knuckles turned stark white.

"That's not all," Tobias continued, his keyboard clattering in the background like rapid gunfire. "The metadata on the forged PDF wasn't just generated from his office machine. He attached a proprietary legal disclaimer template that belongs to Morse Development Group's chief corporate counsel. Whoever built this file was preparing a parallel civil lawsuit before the press even saw the memo."

The realization hit me with the force of a physical blow to the chest.

My father wasn't merely attempting to humble me or strong-arm me into handing Blake an executive title. He was manufacturing a catastrophic corporate fraud scandal around my acquisition to intentionally depress Meridian’s valuation, trigger NovaCare’s emergency breach clauses, and force me into an emergency bankruptcy buyout where his own holding firm could purchase my patents for pennies on the dollar.

"Tobias," I said, my voice steadying as the numbness of shock gave way to a cold, predatory resolve. "Pull every badge entry, server mirror, and digital footprint from that session. Do not touch their network again."

"Already isolated on an offshore server, Abigail. What are you going to do?"

"I’m going to let him dig his own grave."

I ended the call and walked over to my living room window, looking out over the glittering lights of downtown Charlotte.

For twenty years, I had believed my father’s cruelty was simply disappointment rooted in my refusal to follow his gilded blueprint. Now I finally understood the truth: Edward Morse didn't despise my failures.

He terrified himself over my success, because a daughter who could conquer the business world on her own terms was a daughter he could never control.

My phone on the counter buzzed violently against the marble, lighting up with a familiar incoming caller ID.

It was Blake.
