Chapter 5 - The Master’s Defense

The silence in the alcove was suffocating. Several nearby venture capitalists and Julianne’s father, a prominent managing partner who had just stepped over from the bar, stood entirely frozen.
Grant’s hand hung in the empty air, trembling slightly before he slowly let it drop to his side. ""Mr. Stone, I think there’s a misunderstanding. Emily and I have history, and I was simply reminding her—""
""I don't care about your history,"" Caleb interrupted, his tone colder than deep winter. ""What I asked was whether you were causing a problem for my director.""
Julianne’s father quickly stepped forward, wiping sweat from his forehead. ""Mr. Stone! Forgive us. Julianne, step back. Grant is an associate at our firm, merely an overenthusiastic guest—""
""Your associate just raised his voice to the woman responsible for the flawless execution of this entire estate,"" Caleb said, his steel-gray eyes locking onto Julianne’s father with brutal finality. ""Emily Carter rebuilt this entire operation in under twenty-four hours after the previous firm failed. She holds executive authority over Ridgecrest. If she decides a guest lacks the basic manners to remain on these grounds, that guest leaves. And if your firm employs men who treat women with such vulgar arrogance, Northstar Systems will reconsider its commercial banking contracts with you on Monday morning.""
Julianne’s father went completely pale. He turned on Grant with venomous rage. ""Get out of here. Leave your badge with security and get an Uber. Now!""
""Mr. Vance, please! I didn't mean—""
""Get out, Grant!"" Julianne snapped, mortified as the surrounding elite stared at him with naked disgust.
Grant looked at Emily, his eyes pleading, desperate for the dependable, self-sacrificing woman who had spent six years cleaning up his messes and absorbing his insults.
Emily didn't look away. But she didn't offer him a lifeline, either. She simply looked at him with calm, absolute indifference. Grant wasn't a monster; he was just small. A desperately insecure man who had tried to build a throne out of stepping stones made from her kindness.
""Security,"" Emily said quietly into her radio. ""Please escort Mr. Mercer to the front gate.""
Two towering security guards took Grant firmly by the elbows, wheeling him around and marching him through the front doors as the room watched in whispers.
Caleb turned back to Emily, his fierce demeanor softening into something genuine and rare. ""Are you alright?""
May you like
Emily took a steadying breath, feeling the last invisible chains of her past shatter into dust. ""I'm better than alright, Mr. Stone. The second course is ready to be served.""
Caleb smiled—a real, captivating smile that lit up his sharp features. ""Then lead the way.""
