Chapter 4 - The Exposure

Grant Mercer felt like he had finally arrived. Walking through the limestone arches of Ridgecrest with Julianne Vance on his arm, he adjusted the cuffs of his expensive tuxedo and smiled condescendingly at the waitstaff offering crystal flutes of vintage Dom Pérignon.
""This is the real league, Julianne,"" Grant whispered in her ear, his eyes roving greedily over the contemporary art pieces lining the gallery walls. ""Caleb Stone is the biggest whale in finance right now. If I can get five minutes with him tonight, our branch’s numbers will shatter every record.""
""Just don't embarrass my father,"" Julianne warned, checking her reflection in an ornate mirror. ""He barely convinced the organizers to give us extra badges.""
""Trust me, babe. I know how to handle these people. I know how to project success.""
Grant turned around, flashing his most rehearsed, confident smile, ready to charm the nearest executive.
Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks.
Walking toward them, flanked by the head of private security and carrying an executive master terminal, was Emily. She wore no makeup except for subtle mascara and a bold crimson lipstick that drew attention to her razor-sharp cheekbones. Her tailored suit clung to her figure with severe elegance, and the staff moved around her with immediate, submissive deference.
Grant’s jaw dropped. ""Emily? What... what are you doing here?""
Emily stopped three feet in front of him. Her eyes were totally clear, void of the desperate warmth he had exploited for over half a decade.
""Good evening, Mr. Mercer,"" Emily said, her tone cool and entirely professional. ""I see you're carrying a secondary pass under the Vance Corporate ledger. Your invitation stipulates access to the lower terrace and dining gallery only. The private suites and executive lounge are strictly off-limits.""
Julianne looked between them, her brow furrowing with sudden irritation. ""Grant, who is this woman? Is she one of the event coordinators?""
Grant’s face turned bright crimson with humiliation. ""She's... she's my ex. Emily, stop this ridiculous stunt. You're working an event here? Do you realize how unprofessional it is to harass the guests?""
""No one is being harassed, Grant,"" Emily replied quietly. ""You're standing in the house I manage. The champagne in your hand was selected by me, the security letting you stand on this marble answers to me, and if you raise your voice again, the guards behind you will physically remove you from the premises.""
Grant stepped forward, lowering his voice into a sharp hiss. ""You think having a walkie-talkie makes you somebody? You're still just a domestic servant, Emily! You're hired help in a fancy house! You'll never be on this side of the glass!""
""Is there an issue here?""
The low, icy voice silenced the entire alcove.
Caleb Stone walked over, his presence immediately causing Julianne to gasp and snap to attention. Grant scrambled to fix his expression, plastering on a broad, sycophantic grin, extending his hand outward like an eager puppy.
""Mr. Stone! What an incredible evening! I'm Grant Mercer, Senior Associate at Vanguard Capital—""

Caleb didn't look at Grant's outstretched hand. He didn't even look at Grant's face. He looked directly at Emily, his voice laced with protective intensity.
""Emily, is this man causing you a problem?""
