Chapter 3 - The Wolves Arrive

Saturday evening descended over Bel Air like a sheet of spun black silk. From the private access road, a procession of sleek black sedans, Maybachs, and vintage convertibles began winding their way up to Ridgecrest. Emily stood inside the command station near the main entrance, dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal pantsuit, an earpiece nestled discreetly behind her ear.
She watched the guest list unfold on her tablet. Silicon Valley billionaires, private equity titans, international philanthropists, and prominent Los Angeles power brokers stepped out of their vehicles and were greeted by seamless service, vintage champagne, and breathtaking floral installations that looked effortless yet impossible.
""Everything is flawless, boss,"" her head of floor staff whispered through the radio. ""Guests are already raving about the canapés. Stone is working the terrace.""
Emily monitored the room from the elevated mezzanine. Caleb was magnetic. In a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo, he commanded the crowd without raising his voice, effortlessly steering conversations worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Yet, every few minutes, his eyes would drift up toward the mezzanine, checking to see if Emily was there. When their eyes met across the glittering sea of diamonds and silks, Caleb offered an imperceptible nod of deep respect.
Then, the private security intercom buzzed with static.
""Carter, we have a minor issue at the lower gate,"" the security guard reported. ""One of the private wealth management sponsors arrived with an unapproved plus-one. He's insisting on entry, claiming his firm holds an executive partnership tier with Northstar Systems.""
""What's his name?"" Emily asked, tapping the security roster on her tablet.
""Grant Mercer. He's with some vice president's daughter named Julianne Vance.""
Emily froze. Her blood turned to ice water, then instantly flared into molten heat. Grant had spent six years telling her that she was an invisible nuisance who belonged in the shadows, and now he was trying to gatecrash the very sanctuary she was orchestrating.

""Let them through,"" Emily said smoothly into the mic, her voice deadly calm. ""Escort them directly to the main salon.""
She stepped down the grand staircase, her posture straight, her chin held high. The time for crying in grocery store parking lots was over.
