Chapter 9 - Vengeance on the Rails

The abandoned South Side rail yard was a graveyard of rusted boxcars and freezing industrial hangars. Inside Hangar 4, Ethan Whitaker was suspended by heavy chains from an overhead crane, his bare torso bruised and bloody from Marco’s interrogations. Across the room, tied to a wooden chair, Sophie wept silently, her eyes red and terrified.
""All you have to do is sign the digital transfer codes, Ethan,"" Marco sneered, wiping sweat from his forehead as he held a tablet before Ethan’s battered face. ""Your bank accounts in Panama, your ownership of the port terminals. Sign them, and maybe I let your daughter freeze to death quickly instead of putting a bullet in her.""
Ethan lifted his head, his swollen eyes glaring through strands of bloody dark hair. He chuckled—a low, terrifying sound that made Marco’s mercenaries exchange nervous glances.
""You really are an idiot, Marco,"" Ethan rasped, his voice dripping with venom. ""You thought my weakness was love. You didn't realize that a man who has something to fight for is ten times more dangerous than a man with nothing left to lose.""
Suddenly, the hangar’s massive halogen skylight shattered into a thousand raining shards of glass.
A flashbang grenade detonated in mid-air with a blinding white flash and an ear-splitting boom, disorienting every guard in the room. Before the smoke could clear, automatic gunfire erupted from the elevated catwalks. Two mercenaries dropped instantly, crimson splashing across the rusted steel containers.
Ethan didn't waste a microsecond. Using the momentum of his body, he swung his legs up, catching Marco by the throat in a brutal scissor-lock. With a violent twist of his hips, Ethan snapped Marco’s arm, sending the tablet and the keys to his chains clattering across the floor.
High above on the catwalk, Ava moved with the grace of a deadly dancer. Her figure skating reflexes—balance, precision, and lightning-fast agility—translated lethally into combat. Firing short, controlled bursts from the MP5, she picked off the remaining guards who were scrambling for cover.
""Sophie, close your eyes!"" Ava shouted, leaping down from an eight-foot shipping container, landing silently on the concrete floor.
She sprinted directly toward the little girl, slicing the ropes binding Sophie with a combat knife. ""I've got you, baby, I've got you!""
""Ava!"" Sophie threw her arms around Ava’s neck, burying her face into her shoulder.
Behind them, a roar of fury erupted. Marco, clutching his broken arm, lunged toward Ava with a drawn blade. ""You miserable little—!""
A deafening gunshot cut him off.

Ethan, having freed one arm from the chains and retrieved a fallen mercenary's pistol, stood over Marco. A single smoking bullet hole was centered directly between Marco’s eyes. The corrupt mobster collapsed onto the cold concrete, dead before he hit the ground.
Ethan dropped the gun, staggering toward Ava and Sophie. Ava caught him as his knees buckled, her arms wrapping around both the bruised titan and the trembling little girl.
