Chapter 10 - The Princess and the King

Six months later, the Chicago sun sparkled brilliantly across the glass facade of the United Center.

Inside the arena, thousands of spectators cheered as the annual Hope for Children charity gala kicked off. Flags and banners hung from the rafters, celebrating a completely revamped city foundation funded by the Whitaker Family Trust. The underground war was over; Marco Moretti’s syndicate had been wiped from memory, and Ethan Whitaker had systematically dismantled his illegal operations, converting his vast empire into legitimate global shipping and real estate logistics.

In the front row of the private VIP box sat Ethan. He wore a crisp navy suit, his jaw clean and commanding, his eyes shining with an unmistakable, peaceful glow. Beside him sat his trusted lieutenants, no longer carrying submachine guns under their jackets, but acting as respectful security for a legitimate titan of industry.

The arena lights dimmed to a soft, ethereal lavender.

The announcer’s voice echoed over the PA system: ""Ladies and gentlemen, performing together for the first time, please welcome Miss Ava Monroe and Miss Sophie Whitaker!""

The crowd erupted in thunderous applause.

Onto the gleaming ice glided Ava, wearing an exquisite gown of spun silver and icy blue, looking radiant, strong, and completely healthy. Her lungs were whole; her breath was deep and effortless. And holding her hand, dressed in an identical miniature silver dress, was seven-year-old Sophie, smiling from ear to ear.

The orchestral music began to swell—a soaring, triumphant waltz.

Ava guided Sophie through a series of synchronized glides, spins, and graceful turns. Every move was effortless, a testament to months of patient, loving practice. When Sophie executed a perfect beginner’s waltz jump and landed on one clean edge, the entire arena gasped and clapped in delight. Sophie beamed, throwing her hands in the air.

Ava swept past the VIP box, her hazel eyes locking directly onto Ethan. She didn't skate like she was running from death anymore. She skated like someone who had found home.

Ethan stood up, clapping proudly, a wide, breathtaking smile spreading across his face. Beside him, tears of pride welled in his eyes.

As the performance reached its grand finale, Ava lifted Sophie into a graceful spinning lift, setting her down gently beneath the bright center spotlight as thousands of white roses rained down onto the ice from the roaring stands.

Sophie immediately skated to the barrier, leaning over to hug her father. Ethan scooped her up into his arms, kissing her cheek before looking down at Ava, who was stepping off the ice onto the rubber mat.

Ethan reached out with his free hand, pulling Ava against him, right there in front of the flashing cameras, reporters, and thousands of cheering spectators. He didn't care who saw. He didn't care about the whispers.

""You flew,"" Ethan whispered against Ava’s lips.

May you like

""We flew,"" Ava corrected with a radiant smile, wrapping her arms around Ethan’s neck. ""Because you gave us our wings.""

Ethan leaned in and kissed her deeply, sealing a future where fear had no power, shadows had no hold, and love had finally conquered the dark."
