Chapter 6 - A Dance Before the Storm

That Friday evening, the snow fell heavily over Lake Michigan, blanketing the Whitaker estate in deep, silent drifts of white. Inside the main drawing room, a roaring fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting long, golden shadows across the room. Sophie had fallen asleep on the plush sofa, clutching her white skates against her chest like a teddy bear.

Ethan gently picked up his daughter, carrying her upstairs to her bedroom with practiced tenderness. Ava watched from the doorway, her heart aching with a profound, terrifying affection. When Ethan returned downstairs, he poured two glasses of vintage red wine, handing one to Ava as she stood looking out the massive French windows at the frozen lake.

""She loves you, you know,"" Ethan said softly, standing close behind her. She could feel the radiating heat of his broad frame, steady and protective.

""She’s an angel, Ethan. You did an incredible job raising her alone,"" Ava whispered, turning to face him.

""I didn't raise her. I just shielded her from the monster I have to be outside those gates,"" Ethan murmured, his eyes locking onto Ava's lips. ""Until you came here. You brought music back into this house, Ava. You made me remember that there’s a world outside of war.""

Ava set her wine glass on the nearby table, her pulse racing. ""Ethan... I know who you are. I know the danger that surrounds you. But when I'm with you, I don't feel afraid. I feel safe.""

Ethan stepped closer, his powerful hands gently cradling her jawline. His thumbs stroked her cheekbones, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that took her breath away. ""I cannot promise you a peaceful life, Ava. But I swear on my daughter’s soul, no one will ever harm you as long as I have breath in my body.""

Ava closed the distance, her lips meeting his in a passionate, desperate kiss that shattered years of cold isolation. Ethan pulled her flush against his chest, holding her as though she were the only real thing left in a world of violence. Outside, the blizzard howled against the reinforced glass, but inside, two scarred souls had finally surrendered to each other.

Neither knew that three miles down the road, a hijacked delivery van with disabled transponders was slowly cutting its way through the snowstorm.
