Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Dimples

"Ethan, please," Margaret stammered, her voice suddenly shrinking into a pathetic whimper. "Everything I did, I did to protect this family! You were going to throw away your heritage, your bloodline, for a nobody! Look at Vanessa—she understands our world! Claire was going to drag you down into the gutter!"

"She didn't drag me down," Ethan shouted, his voice cracking with three years of repressed agony. "You destroyed my life! You made me believe the woman I loved abandoned me without a word! I spent months wishing I was dead because of you!"

Vanessa took three hasty steps back from Ethan, gathering the trains of her wedding dress in utter disgust. "Margaret, you told my father that the Walker portfolio was flourishing! You lied about your solvency, and you lied about your family's honor! This wedding is an absolute farce. I will not have my family's name dragged through the mud of your filthy, petty schemes."

Vanessa ripped the diamond-encrusted veil from her hair, threw it onto the marble aisle, and stormed toward her limousine without looking back once. Her parents quickly followed, shouting commands at their drivers, as the rest of the high-society guests began scrambling for their cars in a frantic rush to escape the scandal.

Margaret sank to her knees among the dropped floral bouquets, watching her entire social architecture collapse into dust within five minutes.

Ethan stood alone in the center of the lawn, trembling. Tears tracked down his cheeks as he looked at Claire. "Claire... I swear to God, I never knew. I never sent those messages. I loved you. I spent three years hating myself because I thought I wasn't enough to make you stay. Can you ever forgive me?"

Claire looked at the man she had once adored. The deep, burning anger inside her chest began to dissolve, replaced by a profound, bittersweet clarity. She stepped closer, reaching out to touch his lapel with gentle fingers.

"I didn't come here to ruin you, Ethan," Claire whispered softly. "I came here because your mother sent me an invitation to mock me. She wanted to show me that I was nothing compared to the life she planned for you. But there was something she took from you three years ago that wasn't hers to take."

Ethan’s brow furrowed. That familiar, bewildered crease appeared between his eyebrows—the exact crease Claire saw every single morning.

Claire turned toward the black helicopter. She raised her hand and signaled toward the tinted windows.

The cabin door slid open once more. Rachel, the nanny, carefully stepped down onto the turf, holding two small children by their hands.

Noah wore a miniature navy blazer with a little bowtie, his blond hair ruffled by the Hudson Valley breeze. Emma wore a pale blue dress, holding a plush rabbit tightly against her chest. As they stepped onto the manicured grass, Noah looked around with Ethan’s piercing, bright blue eyes, while Emma spotted Claire and smiled, revealing a deep, unmistakable dimple in her left cheek.

Ethan froze. The entire world ceased to exist.
