Chapter 3 - The Paper Trail of Deceit

Margaret’s eyes darted frantically toward the assembled guests, scanning the faces of bankers, investors, and high-society patrons whose opinions she valued more than her own family's soul. "Ethan, do not listen to this unhinged woman! She is a liar! She is an opportunist trying to sabotage your marriage to Vanessa because she wants your name!"

"My name?" Claire laughed—a sharp, ringing sound that carried across the courtyard. "Margaret, my company generates more revenue in a quarter than the entire Walker estate has produced in forty years. I don't need your name. I own the ground you are standing on."

Claire reached into Daniel Ross’s briefcase and pulled out a manila folder, flipping it open. She pulled out a stack of laminated telecommunication records and held them up.

"Three years ago, on October twelfth, two phones were registered under the Walker corporate account," Claire explained, addressing Ethan directly. "One was yours, Ethan. The other was an administrative clone requested by your mother under the guise of an IT diagnostic upgrade. When you left for Boston, your phone was cloned. The texts telling me to die, telling me that I was trash and that our relationship was over, were sent from a private terminal inside Walker Hall."

Ethan froze. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him ghostly pale. He turned slowly toward his mother. "Mother... what did you do?"

"She's lying, Ethan!" Margaret cried, her voice rising to a frantic, shrill screech. "She made those documents up! She bought off some digital forensics hacker to frame me!"

"Did I make up this, too?" Claire continued, pulling out a faded, carbon-copy receipt with an official bank stamp. "A wire transfer of fifty thousand dollars paid to my landlord in Westchester on October twentieth, contingent upon the immediate, illegal termination of my lease within twenty-four hours. Followed by a series of quiet phone calls to every single corporate firm that had extended me a job interview, threatening to pull Walker Foundation sponsorships if they hired me."

The guests were openly whispering now. Several prominent business associates shook their heads in disgust. Vanessa looked horrified, clutching her pearls as she realized the Walker family's supposed prestige was built on a crumbling foundation of debt and despicable cruelty.

"You hunted me, Margaret," Claire said, her voice dropping into an intimate, devastating whisper that somehow resonated through the entire courtyard. "You made sure I had no roof over my head. You made sure I couldn't buy groceries. You came to my small apartment, handed me a check, and told me that a waitress had no right to love an heir. You wanted me crushed. You wanted me starved out so that I would leave your precious son alone forever."

Ethan looked as though he had been physically struck by a sledgehammer. He staggered back a half-step, staring at Margaret with pure, unadulterated horror. "Mother... tell me she's lying. Look me in the eye and swear on Father's grave that you didn't do this."

Margaret opened her mouth, but only a dry, pathetic gasp came out. She couldn't meet his gaze. Her silence was a thunderous, inescapable confession.
