Chapter 2 - Shattered Masks and Ancient Lies

The garden descended into an absolute, suffocating silence. Even the string quartet froze with their bows suspended mid-air. Prominent Wall Street executives, Hudson Valley socialites, and politicians leaned forward, murmuring in breathless disbelief. Everyone recognized the woman standing on the lawn: Claire Bennett, the newly crowned logistics mogul who had recently dominated the cover of Forbes.
"Claire..." Ethan whispered, taking an unsteady step toward her. His eyes were wide, taking in her glowing face, the sharp brilliance in her gaze, and the undeniable aura of strength surrounding her. "You... you actually came."
"Ethan, get away from her!" Margaret’s voice cracked with frantic panic. She placed herself squarely between her son and Claire, desperate to salvage the illusion she had constructed. "Claire Bennett, you are an uncouth trespasser! How dare you interrupt my son’s wedding with this vulgar, gaudy spectacle! Security, drag this person off my property immediately!"
Two burly security guards approached, but Daniel Ross stepped in front of them, flashing a certified court order signed by the county magistrate that very morning. The guards glanced at the paperwork, exchanged uneasy looks, and promptly stepped backward.
"You might want to check the deed before declaring who is trespassing, Margaret," Claire replied with an icy smile. "Walker Hall no longer belongs to you. Northline Capital executed the foreclosure buy-out at noon today. As of twelve o'clock, you are standing on my lawn."
The crowd erupted in frantic gasps. Margaret’s face turned the shade of curdled milk. Vanessa Sterling, the bride-to-be, hurried down the aisle holding her massive lace gown, her face flushed with fury.
"What is happening here?" Vanessa demanded, glaring at Ethan and then at Claire. "Ethan, who is this woman? Margaret, why are people saying the house is being foreclosed? What kind of joke is this?"
Ethan didn't hear Vanessa. He couldn't hear anyone except the deafening pulse of blood rushing in his ears. He stared at Claire, ignoring the legal chaos, consumed by the memory of a pain that had never healed.
"Why are you doing this, Claire?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking with raw hurt. "You walked away from me three years ago. You texted me that I was a mistake, that you wanted nothing to do with me, and you vanished. You broke my heart into pieces. Did you come here today just to humiliate me on my wedding day?"
Claire stopped cold. The polished corporate demeanor slipped for a fraction of a second, revealing the searing agony that had fueled her rise. She looked at Ethan, truly looked at him, and saw genuine bewilderment in his eyes.
"I walked away?" Claire asked, her voice dropping into a dangerous, razor-thin register. "I texted you that you were a mistake?"
"Yes!" Ethan stepped closer, his jaw clenching as old grief surfaced. "You sent those texts while I was stuck at that convention in Boston! I called you fifty times, Claire! I drove through a blizzard back to your apartment, only to find the lease terminated and your phone number disconnected! You completely erased me!"

Claire’s eyes widened slightly. A horrible, sickening puzzle began falling into place with terrifying speed. She slowly turned her gaze toward Margaret Walker, whose hands were now trembling so violently she had to grasp her pearl necklace to steady herself.
"Margaret," Claire said, each word dripping with venomous clarity. "Tell your son who actually sent those messages from his phone while he was away."
