Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

Vanessa backed away until her shoulders struck the polished side of the locked Steinway. ""You took those clips out of context! I have been under an intolerable amount of stress trying to manage this massive house, your demanding schedule, and a woman who refuses to cooperate with basic hygiene! I did everything for our future!""

""Our future?"" Ethan took a step forward, pulling a stack of printed financial statements from Marcus Vance’s folder. ""Does our future include fifty thousand dollars wired to a locked memory unit without my signature? Does it include thirty-five thousand dollars stolen from our joint account for a bachelor condominium in Chicago under your personal LLC?""

Vanessa’s eyes darted frantically toward the doorway, but Deputy Miller had shifted his stance, blocking the exit with his hands resting casually on his utility belt.

""And then there’s this,"" Marcus Vance announced, stepping forward with his glasses perched on his nose. ""Miss Hart, yesterday afternoon you visited the First National Bank branch on Elm Street and attempted to file a Durable Power of Attorney bearing Margaret Callaway’s signature. What you didn't realize is that all Callaway family legal instruments are registered exclusively through our firm under a dual-signatory irrevocable trust.""

Marcus turned to Mrs. Gable. ""Mrs. Gable, the document Miss Hart attempted to execute was witnessed by a notary who also happens to be Miss Hart's second cousin. We have already filed an emergency injunction and a complaint with the state bar and licensing board for fraudulent execution of a conservatorship instrument.""

Mrs. Gable shook her head in disgust, immediately opening her leather portfolio and drawing a red line through the intake paperwork. ""Miss Hart, you misrepresented yourself to my department as the designated legal guardian. Not only is this assessment null and void, but I am filing an immediate report with the state adult protective services fraud division.""

""Ethan, please!"" Vanessa’s voice cracked into tears, the sudden performance of victimhood arriving right on cue. She reached out toward him, her hands shaking, her manicured fingers clawing at the sleeve of his shirt. ""I panicked! You’re always gone, I felt so isolated, I thought if Margaret was in a specialized facility, we could finally start our lives together—we could focus on us! I love you! You gave me this ring!""

Ethan looked down at her hand, where the two-carat platinum diamond caught the Ohio sunlight.

""Take it off,"" Ethan said flatly.

Vanessa blinked, frozen. ""What?""

""Take off the ring, Vanessa. It was my grandmother's. It belonged to a woman who built this town with kindness, dignity, and grace. It does not belong on the finger of someone who steals oatmeal from an invalid.""

Vanessa’s tearful facade evaporated instantly, stripped away by the raw, venomous hatred underneath. The sobbing stopped. Her eyes narrowed into slits.

""You think you’re a hero, Ethan?"" she hissed, tearing the platinum band from her finger and throwing it hard against his chest. It bounced off his collar and hit the hardwood with a high, ringing ping. ""You’re an absent coward who buries his head in spreadsheets because he couldn't bear to see his mother drool! You dumped her on an aide because you didn't have the stomach to watch her rot!""

A sharp, ringing slap echoed through the grand room.

It wasn't Ethan.

It wasn't Grace.

It was Rosa, who had marched out of the kitchen with her sleeves rolled up, her eyes blazing with seventeen years of Callaway family loyalty.

""You shut your mouth in this house,"" Rosa whispered, her chest heaving. ""Get out before I throw you down the front steps myself.""

Deputy Miller stepped forward, taking Vanessa firmly by the elbow. ""Miss Hart, you need to collect your purse and accompany me to the county station. There are several formal statements regarding financial fraud and elder intimidation that require your immediate attention.""

Vanessa ripped her arm away, smoothing her jacket with shaking, furious hands. She glared at Ethan, then at Grace, and finally at Margaret sitting quietly in the chair.

""Enjoy changing her diapers, Grace,"" Vanessa spat. ""Because that’s all this house is now. A museum for the dying.""

She turned on her high heels and stormed down the hallway, Deputy Miller following closely behind her. The heavy oak front door slammed shut, rattling the antique leaded glass in the transom.
