Chapter 2 - Masks and Motives

Ethan didn’t bother packing his garment bag. He shoved his laptop, charger, and passport into his briefcase, tossed his suit jacket over his arm, and walked out of the suite without glancing back. By 3:15 AM, he was sitting in the back of a black town car speeding toward the private terminal at Sky Harbor. The neon signs of Phoenix blurred past the tinted glass like bleeding streaks of paint, matching the chaos inside his mind.

He opened his phone and pulled up the financial records for the joint account he had opened with Vanessa three months prior. It was supposed to cover the wedding deposits, the catering tastings, the deposits for the venue in Napa Valley. Ethan had funded it with two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

His eyes narrowed as he scrolled through the recent transactions.

There was a wire transfer sent forty-eight hours ago: fifty thousand dollars to an LLC named Pinnacle Senior Living & Memory Care.

A second transfer had been initiated just yesterday afternoon: thirty-five thousand dollars to a luxury real estate brokerage in Chicago, categorized as an earnest money deposit for a condominium overlooking Lake Michigan.

She wasn’t just planning to move his mother into a nursing home. She was liquidating his assets behind his back, buying their future property without his consent, and orchestrating Margaret’s institutionalization while he was three time zones away.

Ethan clicked on his contacts and dialed his attorney, Marcus Vance. Marcus had been his father’s legal counsel for three decades and was one of the few men alive Ethan trusted implicitly. It took five rings, but Marcus picked up, his voice thick with sleep.

""Ethan? It’s past five in the morning back here. What’s happened?""

""Marcus, I need you at my house in Hawthorne Ridge by eleven o'clock,"" Ethan said, his tone leaving no room for questions. ""Bring a certified copy of my father’s family trust, the deed to the property, and the original medical guardianship documents we drafted after Mom’s stroke.""

Marcus was silent for a beat. The lawyer's sharp mind cut through the fog of sleep instantly. ""Has Vanessa done something?""

""She tried to execute a fraudulent durable power of attorney while Mom was heavily medicated,"" Ethan said, staring out at the runway floodlights as the car pulled up to the hangar. ""She wire-transferred eighty-five thousand dollars out of our joint account to private facilities. And she’s been abusing my mother psychologically on camera for the last two weeks.""

""Good God,"" Marcus breathed. ""Ethan, the house and the majority of your father’s estate are held in Margaret’s name under an irrevocable trust that transfers solely to you upon her passing or your written assumption of trusteeship. If Vanessa managed to get Margaret’s signature on a blanket durable power of attorney that bypasses your designation, she could technically petition a court for temporary conservatorship if she claims you’re an absentee guardian.""

""She’s presenting herself as the resident caretaker,"" Ethan realized, his stomach churning with disgust. ""She stayed in Ohio while I handled the West Coast rollout. She told the doctors she was managing Mom's daily routine so she could build a paper trail of primary caregiving.""

""Precisely,"" Marcus said. ""If she filed that petition while you were in Phoenix, a family court judge might have granted emergency temporary authority without a hearing. She could have had Margaret moved into Pinnacle by Friday afternoon.""

""She won't get the chance,"" Ethan snapped. ""Get the paperwork ready, Marcus. And call the Hawthorne Ridge Police Department. I want Officer Miller on standby near the gates.""

""Officer Miller? That’s Grace’s brother, isn’t it?""

""Yes,"" Ethan said, stepping onto the jet stairs as the twin engines began to whine. ""And right now, Grace Miller is the only reason my mother is still safe under her own roof.""
