Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call

Rosa stayed silent on the line for so long that Ethan thought the connection had dropped through the desert air. In the silent Phoenix hotel room, all he could hear was the frantic hum of the air conditioner and the erratic, furious thumping of his own heart. His knuckles were chalk-white against the edge of the glass desk.
""Mr. Ethan,"" Rosa said at last, her voice trembling in a way he had never heard in seventeen years. ""Miss Vanessa told Grace that if she spoke to you, she would file a report with her nursing agency claiming theft. She said nobody believes a home aide over the woman wearing a two-carat diamond ring.""
A cold, razor-sharp fury flooded Ethan’s veins. It washed away the exhaustion, the lingering sleepiness of late-night travel, and the foolish illusion of the domestic life he thought he was building. He looked back at his laptop screen. On the frozen camera feed, Margaret Callaway was still sitting by the window in Ohio, her fragile shoulders hunched against the pale morning light, her fingers clasped over Grace’s hand.
""She threatened to ruin Grace's license?"" Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously low.
""Yes,"" Rosa murmured. ""And two days ago, Miss Vanessa brought a notary to the house. Your mother was tired, confused by her afternoon medication. Miss Vanessa put a pen in her hand and told her it was a consent form for an updated insurance policy. But I saw the heading when she slipped it back into her leather briefcase. It said Durable Power of Attorney.""
Ethan felt the floor drop out beneath him. He remembered the phone conversation he had watched just moments ago on the playback: If Margaret gives me authority over medical decisions while Ethan travels, everything gets simpler.
Vanessa had never loved Hawthorne Ridge. She had tolerated the sprawling, historic brick home his father had built because she assumed Ethan would eventually sell it to buy a sleek glass penthouse in downtown Chicago. When Margaret’s stroke occurred six months ago, Vanessa had played the role of the devoted, supportive partner. She had researched rehabilitation clinics, brought soothing organic teas, and held his hand through the terrifying nights in the ICU. But the moment Ethan had boarded the plane for a two-week executive summit in Arizona, the mask had slipped off completely.
""Rosa, listen to me very carefully,"" Ethan said, standing up and reaching for his travel bag. ""Do not let Vanessa know you spoke to me. Do not let her see that you know anything. Is Grace still in the kitchen?""
""She is boiling fresh oats on the stove right now, Mr. Ethan. Miss Vanessa went upstairs to change into her business suit before her nine o'clock meeting.""
""Take the phone into the kitchen. Put Grace on. Now.""
There was the muffled rustle of Rosa tucking the receiver into her apron pocket, followed by the quiet creak of floorboards. Through the camera feed, Ethan watched Rosa enter the kitchen frame. She touched Grace’s shoulder. Grace turned, startled, wiping flour from her apron. When Rosa handed over the phone, Grace pressed it to her ear with an expression of guarded caution.
""Grace,"" Ethan said before she could speak. ""I saw the oatmeal. I saw the piano. I saw everything on the security feed.""
Grace let out a breath that sounded like a sob she had swallowed for weeks. ""Mr. Callaway... your mother is trying so hard. She wants to speak. She wants to play. But every time she makes progress, Miss Hart shuts the door. She told her she was a burden. She told her that useless old hands shouldn't touch an expensive Steinway.""
""I am boarding a private charter out of Phoenix Sky Harbor within ninety minutes,"" Ethan said, his voice deadly steady. ""I will be back on Ohio soil before lunch. I need you to do one thing for me, Grace. Can you protect my mother for four more hours?""
May you like
""I have protected her since the day I walked through this door,"" Grace replied softly, her brown eyes lifting toward the corner camera as if she could see him staring right back at her. ""I won't let her touch Mrs. Callaway again.""
""Good,"" Ethan said. ""And Grace? When Vanessa leaves for her meeting, check the top right drawer of the desk in my study. Find the green leather folder. You need to know what she is planning before I land.""
