Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

Claire didn't freeze. Unlike the woman who had spent four years taking emotional hits in silence, Claire moved with decisive, lightning-fast reflexes.
She sidestepped the wild swing, grabbed the heavy leather executive chair, and shoved it with all her strength into Victoria’s midsection. The heavy wheels hit Victoria with a dull thud, knocking the wind out of her and sending her stumbling backward over a low glass coffee table.
The brass weight slipped from Victoria’s fingers, crashing loudly against the floor. Victoria scrambled to get up, her eyes wild, but the heavy mahogany doors of the office burst open.
""Claire!""
Julian Thorne rushed into the room, followed immediately by three armed building security guards. Julian took in the scene in half a second. Seeing Victoria attempting to grab the weapon again, Julian moved instantly, pinning Victoria against the carpet with authoritative precision while the security guards moved in with restraints.
""Get your hands off me!"" Victoria shrieked, thrashing wildly. ""You're all going to pay for this! Adrian will destroy you all!""
""Adrian is currently signing the papers liquidating your father's trust to pay restitution to the federal court, Victoria,"" a cold voice echoed from the doorway.
Everyone stopped.
Adrian Vale stood at the entrance. He looked completely shattered. He had arrived at the building hoping to leave a bouquet of white roses at Claire's reception desk—the same roses she had left at the rehearsal dinner—only to see the police cruisers pulling up outside.
He stared down at Victoria, who was now handcuffed on the floor.
""Adrian! Help me!"" Victoria wailed, looking up at him with desperate tears. ""Tell them! Tell them you love me! Tell them I was doing it for us!""
Adrian looked at her, and Claire saw the final, total death of the illusion that had ruled his entire adult life. There was no pity left in his eyes. No guilt. No protective warmth. There was only absolute disgust.
""I gave you everything out of respect for your father's memory,"" Adrian said, his voice hollow, dead, and cold. ""And you used his sacrifice as a weapon to poison my life and rob the only woman who mattered to me. I have testified fully against you to the Department of Justice. You will spend the next fifteen years in federal prison, Victoria. And I will never say your name again.""
Victoria let out a bloodcurdling scream of rage and despair as the security officers hauled her to her feet and dragged her out into the hallway, her cries echoing down the corridor until the elevator doors swallowed them whole.
Silence descended upon the ruined office.
Julian turned immediately to Claire. His hands were gentle as he touched her shoulders, his gray eyes searching her face with fierce, protective devotion. ""Are you hurt? Did she touch you?""
""I'm fine, Julian,"" Claire breathed, leaning into his touch for a brief, reassuring second. ""I'm completely fine.""
Adrian stood by the door, watching Julian’s hands on Claire. The pain etched into Adrian's face was so profound, so devastating, that it looked as if his entire soul was being carved out. He had fought through boardroom wars, hostile takeovers, and million-dollar lawsuits without flinching. But watching another man protect Claire—watching Claire lean into that man’s comfort with total, natural trust—broke him beyond repair.
""Claire,"" Adrian whispered, his voice trembling. ""I'm so sorry. If I had just listened to you that night at the boutique... If I had just come to the fitting...""
Claire looked at him one last time. There was no bitterness left in her heart. Only the quiet, impenetrable boundary of a woman who had finally found her peace.
May you like
""That fitting was months ago, Adrian,"" Claire said softly. ""The dress has been returned. And the woman who was waiting for you doesn't exist anymore.""
Adrian swallowed hard. He nodded once, a broken, defeated man, turned around, and walked out into the empty night, never to cross her path again.
