Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Strike

Two months later, the business world was stunned once again, but this time by an announcement of unprecedented innovation. Whitmore Shipping and Thorne Global Logistics had announced a historic joint venture: the Lakeview Automated Maritime Corridor.
Claire and Julian had spent weeks working side by side. What had begun as professional admiration had rapidly blossomed into a deep, electric, and mutually respectful romance. Julian listened to her ideas, celebrated her victories, and made her laugh in ways she hadn't laughed in years. When they worked late, he didn't disappear into brooding silence; he ordered her favorite Thai food, played jazz on the office speakers, and walked her safely to her car, never demanding more than she was willing to give.
One Tuesday evening, Claire was working late in her newly redesigned corner office at Heritage Tower. The entire staff had gone home, leaving the polished floor quiet. She was reviewing the final land-use permits when the glass door to the outer lobby clicked open.
Claire frowned. ""Security?""
There was no answer, only the faint, erratic dragging of footsteps across the plush carpet.
Claire stood up slowly, her instincts instantly on high alert. She reached into her desk drawer and gripped her emergency panic button linked to building security.
A figure emerged from the shadows of the executive hallway.
It was Victoria Crane.
She was unrecognizable. Free on a two-million-dollar bail awaiting her federal trial, she looked wild, emaciated, and manic. Her hair was greasy and unkempt, her coat stained, and her eyes wide with a frantic, terrifying madness. In her right hand, she clutched a heavy brass paperweight she had grabbed from the reception desk.
""You think you won, don't you?"" Victoria hissed, her voice raspy and trembling with venomous rage. ""You ruined my life! The judge revoked my passport! My assets are frozen! Every friend I ever had blocked my number! And you're on the cover of Forbes smiling with Julian Thorne!""
Claire stayed calm, keeping the desk between them while her finger pressed the silent alarm under the wood. ""Victoria, you broke into a commercial building under active surveillance. You are violating your bail conditions. If you leave right now, I won't tell the prosecutor.""
""I don't care about the prosecutor!"" Victoria screamed, lunging forward and slamming the brass weight onto Claire's desk, splintering the polished glass surface. ""Adrian won't even take my calls! He sold my apartment! He left me with nothing! He was supposed to marry you, give me the docks, and take care of me forever! You took him from me! You exposed everything!""
""You exposed yourself when you stole millions from the man who was trying to honor your father,"" Claire said steadily, slowly shifting toward the heavy oak side-door that led to the private executive staircase. ""Adrian didn't destroy you, Victoria. Your own greed did.""

""If I'm going to prison,"" Victoria cried, her face twisting into an animalistic snarl as she raised the heavy brass weight, ""you're going to the hospital first!""
Victoria lunged around the desk, swinging the heavy brass weapon directly toward Claire’s face.
