Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

""What the hell is this?"" Adrian roared, stepping into the room. He looked between Claire, Marcus, and Victoria, his chest heaving with exertion. He had clearly driven straight from the Whitmore estate after realizing Claire was nowhere near her parents' house.
""Adrian, thank God!"" Victoria cried instantly, throwing herself out of the chair and running toward him, burying her face in his damp coat. ""They broke in! They're threatening me, Adrian! Marcus brought fake documents to frame me because Claire wants revenge for the rehearsal dinner!""
Adrian wrapped an arm around Victoria instinctively, his fierce gaze locking directly onto Claire. ""Have you completely lost your mind? Raiding my corporate headquarters in the middle of the night? Claire, whatever twisted game of pride you're playing, it ends now. You walk out of here, we pull the lawyers into a room at seven, and we resolve this like civilized adults before the market opens.""
""Check the terminal, Adrian,"" Claire said evenly, not moving an inch. She didn't raise her voice; she didn't show an ounce of the heartbreak that had consumed her hours before. She stood with absolute, devastating poise.
""What?"" Adrian growled.
""Check the terminal right now,"" Marcus echoed, stepping aside to reveal the open screens on the massive desktop. ""Or better yet, check the offshore routing accounts under the name 'Crane International Holdings.' The ones your chief financial officer quietly authorized under your electronic signature while you were busy playing hero.""
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. He looked down at Victoria, who was clinging to his waist with white-knuckled desperation. For the first time, a flicker of cold doubt cut through his arrogant facade.
""Victoria,"" Adrian said slowly, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. ""Step away from me.""
""Adrian, don't listen to them!"" she sobbed, clutching him tighter. ""They're trying to tear us apart! My father died for you!""
""I said step away from me,"" Adrian repeated, his voice vibrating with sudden authority. He peeled her hands off his lapel and walked around the desk. His hands moved rapidly across the keyboard, his eyes scanning the forensic spreadsheets Marcus had unlocked.
Claire watched his face closely. She saw the exact moment the realization hit him. The sharp inhale. The sudden stiffening of his shoulders. The blood completely draining from his lips.
The ledger was undeniable. Over forty-two million dollars in unauthorized equipment leasing fees, fake maintenance invoices, and dummy supply orders had been funneled through the North Pier holding account over the last eighteen months—all signed with an encrypted token originating from Victoria’s private IP address. Victoria hadn't been an innocent victim of bad gallery investments; she had orchestrated an elaborate embezzlement scheme, knowing Adrian's guilt over her father would prevent him from ever looking closely at her finances.
""You..."" Adrian whispered, slowly looking up from the glowing monitor toward Victoria. His voice was choked with disbelief. ""You stole from the Vale foundation. You forged acquisition documents in Claire's name. You were going to let the federal maritime commission indict Claire's father for tax evasion to cover your offshore losses.""
Victoria backed away until her spine hit the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the rain-slicked abyss of Chicago. Her tears vanished completely, replaced by a twisted, bitter sneer.
""You owed me!"" she screamed, her voice cracking. ""Your father was driving the car that got ambushed! My father took three bullets in his chest while you hid on the floorboard like a terrified child! You built an empire worth billions, and you threw me pennies! You offered me charity, Adrian! Charity! While you bought seven-carat diamonds for this spoiled shipping princess! I took what belonged to me!""
Adrian stood frozen, looking like a man who had stepped onto a battlefield only to realize he had been shooting in the wrong direction for a decade. He turned slowly toward Claire, his eyes hollow with a sudden, suffocating remorse.
""Claire..."" he choked out, taking a step toward her. ""Claire, I didn't know. I swear on my life, I had no idea.""
May you like
""I know you didn't, Adrian,"" Claire said softly, her blue eyes piercing his soul. ""And that is your greatest failure. You were so blinded by your own guilt, so addicted to being the all-powerful savior, that you destroyed the woman who truly loved you to protect a snake.""
Claire turned to Marcus. ""Call the federal marshals. Give them the drive.""
