Chapter 3 - The Midnight Raid

The rain fell in sheets over downtown Chicago at three o'clock in the morning. Claire sat in the back of a black Town Car parked three blocks away from Vale Center, watching the towering steel-and-glass skyscraper pierce the storm clouds. She wore a tailored black trench coat, dark leather boots, and had her hair pulled back into a severe, sleek bun.
Beside her in the leather seat sat Marcus Sterling. Marcus was her late grandfather’s godson, a brilliant forensic corporate attorney who had left Vale’s primary legal team six months earlier after discovering irregular balance-sheet transfers. He carried a battered leather briefcase containing an encrypted hard drive.
""You're sure you want to go through with this tonight, Claire?"" Marcus asked, his deep voice calm, his dark eyes studying her carefully in the ambient glow of the dashboard. ""Once we execute this preemptive discovery audit, Adrian won't just be humiliated. He’ll be under active SEC review by nine in the morning. He will retaliate with everything he has.""
""He already took four years of my dignity, Marcus,"" Claire said, her voice hard as steel. ""He doesn't get to keep my grandfather's harbor. What did you hear from the front desk?""
""Victoria's silver executive badge was scanned into the forty-eighth floor fifteen minutes ago,"" Marcus replied, tapping a tablet screen. ""Just as you predicted. When Adrian left the hotel to try and track you down at your parents' estate, Victoria panicked. She knows that if your signature isn't on those documents by morning, the secondary private equity loan backing her gallery defaults instantly. She’s upstairs trying to wipe the audit trail from the executive terminal.""
""Let's go,"" Claire said.
They entered the private garage beneath the building, bypassing the front lobby cameras using Marcus’s still-active high-level security clearance codes. The private high-speed elevator surged upward silently, the digital floor numbers flashing rapidly: 20, 35, 45, 48.
When the elevator doors parted on the executive authorization suite, the floor was silent except for the faint hum of servers and the low clatter of rapid keystrokes coming from the glass corner office.
Claire pushed open the frosted glass door.
Victoria Crane sat behind Adrian's monolithic marble desk. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her designer silk blouse disheveled, and she had an external hard drive plugged into the central executive terminal. Stacks of printed shipping manifests and acquisition addendums were scattered across the mahogany blotter.
Victoria gasped, dropping a stack of papers that fluttered across the floor. ""Claire! What are you doing here? You're trespassing! This is Adrian's private office!""
""Actually,"" Claire said calmly, stepping inside while Marcus closed the heavy door and leaned against it with his arms crossed, ""this entire floor is technically co-leased by the Whitmore Harbor Authority under the joint development charter. You, however, do not possess any corporate title, employment contract, or legal right to touch that keyboard.""
""Adrian gave me authorization!"" Victoria shouted, her fragile, victimized demeanor vanishing into a look of sheer, venomous spite. ""He promised my father he would take care of me! You have everything—the money, the pedigree, the society name! I lost everything when my father died! Adrian belongs to me, do you hear me? He was mine long before you showed up with your pristine hair and your father's ships!""
""Is that why you've been forging logistics bills through North Pier shell companies for the last six months?"" Marcus interrupted, pulling out a manila file and dropping it onto the desk in front of her. ""Adrian didn't draft that warehouse transfer to protect you, Victoria. You blackmailed his CFO with manufactured accounting discrepancies, forcing Adrian to cover the gap before the merger audit.""
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. Her face turned ghost-white.
Claire walked slowly to the edge of the desk, looking down at the woman who had spent years playing the helpless damsel. ""Adrian thought he was saving you out of sacred honor. But you were robbing him blind, weren't you? And you were going to let him sacrifice my life and my family's legacy to take the fall.""

Before Victoria could answer, the elevator chime echoed outside in the reception hall. Heavy, furious footsteps marched down the hallway.
The door was thrown open. Adrian Vale stood in the threshold, soaked from the rain, his tie gone, his eyes blazing with fury.
