Chapter 8 - The Boardroom Purge

Forty-eight hours after the arrests of Richard and Julian, the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Carter Tower was packed with forty terrified senior executives, board members, and corporate attorneys.

The morning headlines had devastated the financial markets, sending Carter Enterprises' stock into a temporary freefall as news of the attempted assassination and historic embezzlement broke across every national network.

Whispers flew around the massive oval table as the board members scrambled to protect their lucrative bonuses and board seats.

"If the trust is divided, the company will be dismantled!" a senior vice president argued loudly. "We cannot allow an uneducated waitress to hold twenty-five percent voting power over a multibillion-dollar aerospace and logistics firm!"

The double mahogany doors swung open, cutting the room's chaotic murmuring into instant silence.

Alexander walked in, his tall, commanding presence demanding absolute deference.

He didn't wear his usual navy business suit; instead, he wore a crisp charcoal suit with an understated gold lapel pin representing the original company logo from nineteen eighty-four.

Walking beside him was me.

Gone were the stained apron, the faded jeans, and the worn canvas sneakers.

I wore an elegant, tailored emerald-green business dress that matched Evelyn's favorite color, my dark hair styled in a sleek, professional chignon.

Around my wrist, the braided copper cord with the turquoise bead was still proudly displayed, now resting alongside a delicate diamond bracelet Evelyn had gifted me that morning.

Behind us walked four federal marshals and Evelyn herself, seated gracefully in a modern electric wheelchair, her head held high and her eyes shining with quiet triumph.

Alexander didn't take his usual seat at the head of the table.

Instead, he pulled back the master executive leather chair, turned to me, and gestured toward it with a respectful bow.

"Take your seat, Madam Vice-Chairwoman," Alexander announced, his voice reverberating through the vast room.

The board members gasped, several jumping to their feet in sheer disbelief.

"Alexander, this is outrageous!" the lead board director protested. "She hasn't been vetted! She doesn't hold a single business degree!"

I sat down in the executive chair, rested my hands flat on the polished mahogany table, and looked directly into the director's furious eyes.

"I may not have an Ivy League business degree, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice completely steady, carrying the natural authority of a woman who had fought for every scrap of survival her entire life. "But I know how to read a balance sheet. And more importantly, I know how to spot thieves."

I gestured to the federal marshal beside me, who slapped a thick stack of forensic accounting audits onto the center of the table.

"For the past twelve years, six members of this board have been receiving unauthorized secondary consulting dividends funneled through Richard Carter's offshore shell accounts in Panama," I continued, watching four of the directors turn pale as ghosts. "You turned a blind eye to his corruption because he lined your pockets with stolen employee pension funds."

The room became so quiet that the hum of the air conditioning sounded like a jet engine.

"By the authority granted to me as the owner of twenty-five percent of voting shares, combined with Alexander's thirty percent and Evelyn's fifteen percent," I announced firmly, "you four are terminated immediately. Your severance packages are voided, and your files have been handed directly to the Department of Justice."

Two security guards entered the room, escorting the four disgraced directors out of the boardroom in complete, humiliating silence.

Alexander stepped forward, placing a warm hand on my shoulder as he addressed the remaining board members.

"Carter Enterprises was built on the sweat and honor of two sisters who came from nothing," Alexander said, his gaze sweeping the room with undisputed authority. "From this day forward, Clara Vance's name is fully restored to the corporate charter. And her granddaughter will oversee all operations alongside me."

A spontaneous round of applause began from the younger executives at the far end of the table, spreading until the entire room stood in a standing ovation.

I looked over at Evelyn, who had a handkerchief pressed to her eyes, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy.

The forty-year nightmare had finally ended.
