Chapter 2 - The Estate on the Hill

The drive through San Antonio took us far beyond the noisy avenues of Market Square, up into the secluded, guard-gated hills of the Dominion.

I sat in the back of the armored black Maybach, feeling utterly ridiculous in my worn canvas sneakers and faded jeans next to the pristine hand-stitched leather seats.

Evelyn held my hand the entire ride, her thumb tracing the braided copper cord around my wrist with a reverence that gave me goosebumps.

Alexander sat in the front passenger seat, staring straight ahead through the tinted windshield, speaking only to issue terse commands over his encrypted phone.

"Cancel the board meeting with the German consortium," he muttered into the receiver. "Lock down the physical archives in the downtown vault. I want nobody entering the historical record rooms until I arrive."

He hung up, his knuckles white as he gripped the armrest.

When the car finally purred through a pair of towering wrought-iron gates, a massive Mediterranean-style villa rose from behind a grove of live oak trees.

Fountains carved from imported Italian stone cascaded into clear blue pools, and immaculate manicured lawns rolled on for acres.

It looked like something from a luxury architectural magazine, yet the air hanging over the property felt heavy, almost suffocating.

"Welcome home, Clara's girl," Evelyn whispered softly as the chauffeur opened our door.

Two private nurses in navy scrubs immediately rushed down the wide limestone steps to assist Evelyn, but she waved them away with an impatient flick of her trembling wrist.

"I don't need your wheelchairs today, girls," Evelyn announced with a vibrant spark in her voice that caught both nurses off guard. "Emily will walk with me."

I offered my arm, and Evelyn leaned into me, her steps unsteady but determined as we climbed the steps toward the towering double oak doors.

Inside, the foyer soared two stories high, featuring a crystal chandelier that cast dancing rainbows across polished white marble floors.

A handsome, silver-haired man in an immaculate three-piece suit came hurrying down the curved staircase, holding a leather portfolio.

"Alexander, thank goodness you're back," the man said, his polished voice carrying an edge of irritation. "The regional directors have been waiting in the conference room for two hours regarding the acquisition—"

The man stopped abruptly on the bottom step, his eyes landing first on Evelyn, then drifting down to me.

His smug expression vanished, replaced by a subtle, venomous twitch at the corner of his thin mouth.

"Who is this girl, Alexander?" he asked, his tone dropping from professional to sharply condescending. "Why are you dragging a street vagrant into our private residence when we have international investors arriving?"

"Mind your tongue, Uncle Richard," Alexander warned, his voice low, guttural, and vibrating with dangerous restraint. "This is Emily Parker. She is Clara Vance's granddaughter."

Richard's eyes widened in sheer panic for half a second before his face smoothed over into an icy, contemptuous smirk.

"Clara Vance?" Richard chuckled, though the sound was completely hollow. "The thief who embezzled three million dollars from Carter Manufacturing in nineteen eighty-four and fled across the border? Why would you bring the offspring of a common criminal into our house?"

"Because she didn't steal it, Richard," Evelyn snapped, her voice trembling with raw, unadulterated fury. "You did."

The massive foyer fell into a dead, suffocating silence.

Richard didn't blink, but his grip on the leather portfolio tightened so fiercely that the seams groaned.

"Mother is having another episode, Alexander," Richard said smoothly, looking pityingly at the old woman. "Her dementia is progressing. You should have her medication dosage increased immediately before she makes a public spectacle of our family."

"Her mind is as sharp as a razor, Richard," Alexander said, taking three slow, intimidating steps toward his uncle. "And you have until midnight to explain why the offshore ledger you swore was burned forty years ago was just flagged in our London vault."
