Chapter 7 - The Ambush Reversed

At eight-fifteen the following morning, the sun beat down relentlessly on the paved circular driveway outside the main villa.

Three identical black armored SUVs sat idling, their engines humming with low, mechanical power.

From the second-floor library balcony, Richard and Julian stood side by side, holding cups of black coffee, watching the vehicles with smug, expectant anticipation.

"Today, son, the empire returns to its rightful rulers," Richard whispered, raising his mug in a silent toast toward the driveway. "Once Alexander's car burns on the highway, Evelyn's heart will finally give out from grief. By sunset, you and I will control every asset."

"I can't wait to see the look on that waitress's face when the fire starts," Julian chuckled darkly, his eyes gleaming with sadistic excitement.

Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the library burst inward with explosive force.

Four heavily armed tactical operators in unmarked black uniforms swarmed into the room, their weapon lasers painting crimson dots directly across Richard and Julian's chests.

"Hands on your heads! Down on the floor! Now!" the lead operator barked with deafening authority.

Julian dropped his coffee mug, the ceramic shattering and splashing hot liquid across his designer loafers.

"What is the meaning of this?" Richard roared, stepping back toward his desk. "Do you know who I am? I own this company! I will have you all—"

Marcus stepped into the room, grabbing Richard by the back of his tailored neck and slamming him face-first onto the glass conference table with enough force to crack the surface.

"Shut up, old man," Marcus growled, snapping heavy zip-ties around Richard's wrists.

Alexander and I walked into the library, accompanied by two federal prosecutors and a pair of Texas Rangers carrying an official sealed arrest warrant.

Alexander walked straight up to Julian, who was trembling on the floor, clutching his hands behind his head.

Alexander reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out the defused magnetic thermite charge, and dropped it onto the glass table an inch from Julian's nose.

Julian's eyes widened into twin saucers of absolute terror.

"Look familiar, cousin?" Alexander asked in a chilling whisper. "You were sloppy. The high-definition thermal cameras installed in the garage captured your face, your retinal scan, and your fingerprints on the magnetic casing."

"You... you can't prove I put that there!" Julian stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeal. "It's a setup! He's framing me!"

"The remote detonator was found in your nightstand five minutes ago by the Texas Rangers," the senior federal prosecutor announced, stepping forward with a signed warrant. "Julian Carter, you are under arrest for attempted capital murder, domestic terrorism, and criminal conspiracy."

Richard lifted his head from the table, his face bleeding slightly from a minor cut on his cheek, his eyes glaring at me with venomous fury.

"You think this saves you, you little gutter rat?" Richard snarled at me. "The original nineteen eighty-four trust documents were incinerated decades ago! Without those papers, you have no legal claim to a single penny of Carter Enterprises! My lawyers will have me out on bail by noon!"

I smiled, pulling the tarnished brass key with the red ribbon out of my pocket.

"Are you talking about the lockbox hidden in the root cellar beneath the carriage house, Richard?" I asked calmly.

Richard’s mouth dropped open, all the color draining from his face until he looked like a crumbling corpse.

"Maria," Richard choked out, realizing in an instant that the housekeeper he had mistreated for thirty-five years had delivered the final, fatal blow.

"Federal agents retrieved the locked chest from the cellar an hour ago," Alexander said coldly. "Inside was the original, unamended will of my father, along with your signed confession regarding the three-million-dollar payroll theft."

Alexander leaned down, his eyes boring into his defeated uncle.

"Your bail has been denied by the federal magistrate, Richard. You will spend the rest of your miserable life in a maximum-security penitentiary. Take them out of my sight."
