Chapter 9 - The Real Ring

I looked down at the velvet box that had caused so much chaos, so much bloodshed, and ultimately, our liberation.
""I thought this held the encryption key,"" I said, raising an eyebrow at him.
""It did,"" Julian said, opening the lid.
Inside rested an exquisite platinum ring set with a brilliant oval-cut sapphire, surrounded by a halo of tiny, sparkling diamonds. Tucked beneath the ring’s velvet cushion was a microscopic, ultra-dense micro-SD drive—the very piece of technology that had brought down an empire.
""My mother left me this ring before everything fell apart,"" Julian explained softly, picking up the piece of jewelry. ""She told me to keep it until I found a woman who would stand by me through fire. When Marcus cornered us, I hid the drive inside the ring's mounting because I knew if they killed me, they might steal the jewelry, but they’d never suspect the rock itself was hollowed out to hold the chip.""
He took my left hand, sliding off the simple gold band he had given me under his fake identity years ago.
""Ava, I spent eight years pretending to be Ethan Miller because I was terrified of dying,"" he said, his voice trembling with emotion. ""Ethan was a shell, a mask I wore to hide from the monsters. But Julian Vance is the man who loves you with every beat of his heart. Julian Vance wants to wake up beside you every morning, help you raise our beautiful daughter, and spend the rest of his life making up for every secret I ever kept from you.""
He looked up into my eyes, completely vulnerable, waiting for a judgment he knew I had every right to deliver.
""Will you marry me, Ava? Not Ethan. Me.""
I looked over at Clara, sleeping peacefully in her clear plastic bassinet beside the bed, completely unaware of the storm that had raged outside her nursery. Then I looked at the man who had thrown himself in front of an assassin’s gun without a second’s hesitation to keep us safe.
""Only on one condition,"" I said, a small smile breaking across my face.
""Anything,"" he replied eagerly.
""You are on diaper duty for the next six months. No arguments, no exceptions.""

Julian let out a breathless, joyful laugh that ended in a sob. He slipped the sapphire ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly.
""Deal,"" he whispered, leaning down to press his lips against mine in a kiss that tasted of tears, relief, and the sweet promise of a tomorrow we no longer had to fear.
