Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Hospital

The private medical annex was tucked away behind an industrial park, operating under the patronage of a medical charity my father had funded for over two decades. There were no bright public waiting rooms, no crowds, and no digital check-in kiosks that could trace our identities.

A trusted obstetrician, Dr. Eleanor Wright, met us at the back entrance with a wheelchair.

""Richard called ahead,"" she said crisply, examining my vitals as two nurses wheeled me rapidly down a brightly lit, sterile corridor. ""Dilation is already at seven centimeters. Blood pressure is dangerously elevated. We need her in delivery room three right now.""

Julian never left my side. He washed his hands, slipped into sterile scrubs, and held my hand with an iron grip that anchored me against the blinding waves of pain. Every time a contraction threatened to tear me apart, he leaned down, whispering words of encouragement into my ear, reminding me of the nursery we had painted yellow, the crib we had assembled together, and the lullabies we had picked out.

""Push, Ava,"" Dr. Wright ordered, her voice calm and commanding. ""Push with everything you have.""

For three agonizing hours, the outside world ceased to exist. There were no assassins, no fake names, no thirty-million-dollar conspiracies. There was only the sound of my ragged breathing, the beep of the heart monitor, and the steady, unbreakable presence of the man holding my hand.

At 7:42 PM, a high, piercing cry filled the delivery room.

""She’s here,"" Dr. Wright announced, smiling as she lifted a tiny, squirming baby girl into the air. ""She’s breathing beautifully. Strong lungs.""

They laid her on my bare chest. She was warm, damp, and impossibly small, with a shock of dark hair that matched Julian’s perfectly. All the rage, confusion, and fear that had suffocated me all afternoon seemed to evaporate the moment her tiny fingers curled around my thumb.

Julian broke down completely beside the bed. He pressed his face against my shoulder, sobbing with an intensity that shook his entire frame.

""She's safe,"" he choked out, kissing my temple repeatedly. ""You did it, Ava. She's here.""

""Her name is Clara,"" I whispered, exhausted beyond measure. ""Clara Vance.""

Julian looked up at me, his eyes red and swollen, stunned that I had used his family's real name.

""You don't have to hide behind Ethan anymore,"" I said, my voice barely audible. ""Not from her. And not from me. But you have to finish this. We cannot raise our daughter in the shadows.""

Before he could answer, the door to the delivery room opened softly. My father stepped inside, his expression grim. Behind him stood a woman in a sharp navy suit, holding a federal badge in her right hand.

""Julian,"" my father said quietly. ""This is Special Agent Harris from the Department of Justice. The drive you threw out the window... my private security team recovered it from the bushes twenty minutes ago. It's intact.""
