Chapter 7 - The Final Ledger

The room was silent except for the low hum of the laptop and the rhythmic sound of Clara’s breathing. Julian leaned over the screen, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with practiced speed. He typed a fifty-two-character cryptographic phrase, followed by placing his thumb against the glowing scanner pad built into the machine.
A series of green verification lines cascaded down the display.
Folders appeared: internal emails, clinical trial falsifications, offshore payment registries, and direct recordings of corporate board meetings discussing the deliberate suppression of fatal side effects in cheap fertility medications.
""Good God,"" Agent Harris whispered, reading the headers on the screen. ""They knew about the heart defects in the third trimester. They buried the findings and paid off the state testing board.""
""They destroyed hundreds of lives,"" Julian said coldly. ""My father refused to sign off on the production run. When he threatened to go to the press, his car was forced off a mountain pass. Julianna and I knew we were next. We staged our deaths because nobody hunts ghosts. But when I met Ava... when I saw how desperately she wanted a child, knowing how much pain she had gone through with standard fertility treatments... I realized I couldn't keep running forever. I had to make sure the world was safe for the family I wanted to build.""
He looked at me, his eyes full of raw, honest emotion.
""I never used Apex's treatments on you, Ava,"" he whispered. ""Every clinic we went to, every doctor we saw—I personally vetted them through independent European labs to ensure you were never exposed to tainted medicine. I swore I would protect you from the poison that killed my father, even if you never knew it.""
Tears pricked my eyes again. All those years, I had thought Ethan was just being overly protective, double-checking every syringe, researching every pharmacy brand, attending every single late-night lab draw. He hadn't been eccentric. He had been guarding my life and our future child against the very monsters who had destroyed his own youth.
""Agent Harris,"" Julian said, closing the laptop with a definitive snap. ""The files are fully unlocked and uploading to your secure cloud servers. Execute the warrants.""

""With pleasure, Mr. Vance,"" the agent said. She picked up her phone and spoke two words into the receiver: ""Operation Sunset. Green light.""
Outside the hospital, far beyond the quiet room where my daughter slept, sirens began to wail across the metropolitan city as federal convoys rolled out into the dark, rainy night.
