Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

Two months later, the first light of winter snow dusted the roof of an elegant, three-story brick townhouse in the quiet, prestigious suburb of Brookline.

The house had a manicured front lawn, a wide porch with a wooden swing, and large bay windows that caught the morning sun.

A moving truck was parked at the curb, its rear ramp extended as two polite men in professional uniforms carried a beautiful oak dining table up the front steps.

Maria Alvarez stood on the front porch, wrapped in a warm woolen coat, holding the brass deed keys in her palm as tears of joy rolled down her cheeks.

No longer a maid living in a basement staff room, she was now the sole owner of a historic family home, free and clear of all debts, mortgages, and liens.

On the lawn below, Sophie was laughing as she caught snowflakes on her mittens, her little boots crunching happily through the fresh white powder.

Beside the porch steps parked a sleek, unmarked dark blue sedan.

Marcus Valente stepped out of the driver's seat, walking up to Maria with a sealed leather portfolio.

"From Mr. Romano," Marcus said, handing her the document with a warm, respectful nod. "The deed registration is fully perfected with the Commonwealth. And Sophie’s enrollment at the private St. Jude Academy starts on Monday morning."

Maria clutched the folder to her chest, her voice trembling with emotion. "Please tell Mr. Romano... tell him we will pray for him every single day of our lives. He gave my daughter a future I could only dream of."

"Mr. Romano knows, Maria," Marcus smiled gently. "He also instructed me to tell you that his private security team will maintain a discrete, twenty-four-hour perimeter on this street. You and Sophie are under the Romano mantle. Forever."

Sophie ran up the porch steps, sliding on the wooden planks before throwing her arms around Marcus's knee.

"Did you bring Barnaby's new winter coat?" Sophie asked, looking up with bright, dancing hazel eyes.

Marcus laughed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a tiny, custom-knitted woolen sweater that the boss had personally ordered from an Italian tailor in the North End.

"Delivered directly from the chairman himself, young lady," Marcus said, handing her the miniature garment.

Sophie beamed with pure, unadulterated happiness, immediately dressing her plush rabbit on the porch railing as the winter sun sparkled across the snow.
