Chapter 8 - The Morning Sun

By 7:00 AM, the storm clouds had rolled away over the Atlantic, replaced by a crisp, brilliant autumn sunrise that bathed the Romano estate in golden light.

The underground garage had been completely swept, sanitized, and secured by three independent technical teams.

Vincent sat on a stone bench in the private courtyard garden, sipping an espresso while reviewing the final security reports on his tablet.

Peter Sloan was in federal custody, singing like a canary under the supervision of federal marshals.

Anthony was already aboard a private charter flight over the mid-Atlantic, headed for permanent exile in the mountainous interior of Sicily.

And the entire waterfront shipping corridor was now unified under the legitimate, legal corporate management of the Romano Maritime Trust.

Soft footsteps sounded on the gravel path.

Vincent looked up to see Sophie walking through the rose garden, holding her mother's hand.

She wore a bright yellow raincoat and little red rubber boots, clutching her plush rabbit tightly under her arm. Her face was clean, her cheeks rosy with health, completely unburdened by the terrifying events of the night before.

Maria stopped a few feet away, her eyes bright with immense gratitude.

"Good morning, Mr. Romano," Maria said with a soft, respectful smile.

"Good morning, Maria. Sophie," Vincent greeted them, setting his coffee cup aside.

Sophie let go of her mother’s hand and walked right up to the stone bench, looking directly into Vincent's eyes with that same stubborn, fearless honesty she had shown in the dark garage.

"Is the bad car gone?" Sophie asked in her clear, sweet voice.

"The bad car has been crushed into a cube of scrap metal, Sophie," Vincent answered with a gentle chuckle. "And the men who touched it will never come back here again."

Sophie tilted her head, thinking this over for a second.

Then, she reached out her little hand, holding out her beloved stuffed rabbit toward the most feared mafia boss in the state.

"You can hold Barnaby for a little bit," Sophie offered generously. "He protected me when I was scared. Maybe he can protect you too."

Vincent paused, feeling a sudden, unexpected tightness in his chest that no corporate takeover or gunfight had ever caused.

He reached out his large, battle-scarred hands and very carefully accepted the worn, fuzzy toy, holding it with the utmost reverence.

"Thank you, Sophie," Vincent whispered, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "I will take very good care of him."
