Chapter 7 - The Reckoning on the Docks

Salvatore stumbled down the metal staircase, his expensive leather boots slipping on the oil-stained diamond plating.
He fell onto the concrete floor at the base of the stairs, his cigar rolling into a puddle of dark rainwater.
Vincent stood over him, the barrel of his rifle lowered toward the old man's chest. Around them, Romano soldiers had already disarmed and cuffed every single surviving Viscari loyalist in the facility.
"Vincent..." Salvatore rasped, clutching his bruised shoulder as he looked up into the eyes of the man he had tried to assassinate. "We can settle this. The docks... you can have the southern berths. We split the import rights fifty-fifty, like we did under your father."
"My father gave you mercy twenty years ago, Salvatore," Vincent replied, his tone devoid of any emotion. "And you used that mercy to hire an assassin to butcher women and children in my home."
"It was business!" Salvatore spat, a pathetic tremor in his voice. "Power requires blood! You know that as well as I do!"
"Not that kind of blood," Vincent said coldly. "You targeted a seven-year-old girl who cleans the floors because she had the honesty to speak the truth. You broke the fundamental code that separates us from rabid animals."
Marcus walked over, carrying a heavy metal case retrieved from Salvatore's private office.
"Every ledger, offshore account number, and municipal bribe list is inside, boss," Marcus reported, snapping the latches shut. "The Viscari syndicate is completely dismantled from Boston to Philadelphia."
Salvatore’s face crumbled into absolute despair. Forty years of criminal scheming, extortion, and bloodshed had vanished into a single aluminum briefcase.
"What are you going to do to me?" Salvatore whispered, his arrogant eyes finally hollowed out by fear.
"You wanted control of the docks, Salvatore," Vincent said, turning toward the open warehouse doors where the black Atlantic ocean churned against the concrete pilings. "Federal agents and state prosecutors will be here in fifteen minutes. Anthony's testimony and Sloan's confession will ensure you spend the rest of your natural life in a supermax facility in Colorado."
Vincent looked down at the old man one last time.
May you like
"You will die in a concrete cage, Salvatore. Forgotten, powerless, and stripped of every dollar you ever stole."
Vincent turned on his heel and walked out of the warehouse into the pouring rain, leaving the ruined boss to face the sirens wailing in the distance.
