Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

By sunrise, Blackridge Performance was crawling with over fifty federal agents, forensic auditors, and state investigators.
The administrative offices were locked down under federal warrants. Agents were carrying out bankers' boxes of physical files, while digital forensics teams cloned every server in the facility. Heinrich Vance and his mercenaries were led away in flex-cuffs, while the two foreign couriers were taken into federal custody for questioning regarding illegal corporate espionage and securities fraud.
Preston Ashford sat in the back of a state trooper's vehicle, his hands cuffed behind him, staring blankly at the floorboards as the reality of multiple federal indictments for fraud, reckless endangerment, and attempted murder sank in.
I leaned against the warm front fender of the 1967 Coronado, drinking hot coffee from a paper cup provided by a paramedic. The morning sun was breaking over the snow-covered pine ridge, casting a brilliant golden light across the frozen tarmac.
The Coronado was scratched, its rear bumper dented, and its body covered in road salt and soot—but the engine still ticked quietly with residual heat, perfectly intact.
Vivian walked over, holding two manila folders in her hands. She had changed into a dark winter parka, but the air of commanding confidence around her was brighter than ever.
""The Attorney General’s office just finished reviewing the hardware core,"" she said, leaning against the car beside me. ""The evidence is bulletproof. The secret agreements Preston signed are completely void under federal anti-monopoly laws. The board of directors held an emergency virtual meeting twenty minutes ago. Preston has been officially removed from all corporate positions.""
She opened the first folder and pulled out a single sheet of paper bearing the Ashford Motor Group corporate seal.
""This is an official public statement that will be released to the Associated Press at noon,"" she said softly. ""It fully exonerates you from any wrongdoing in the 2009 prototype incident. It details how your testing notes were stolen and altered by executive management to conceal systemic safety flaws. Ashford Motor Group is issuing a formal public apology to Evan Mercer.""
I looked at the paper. For fifteen years, I had carried the invisible weight of being branded a failure, a careless mechanic who had ruined his own future. Seeing my name cleared in crisp, undeniable black ink felt like having a massive iron safe lifted off my chest. My eyes burned, but I swallowed the lump in my throat.
""Thank you, Vivian,"" I said, my voice thick with emotion.
""That's only the apology, Evan,"" Vivian continued, opening the second folder. ""This is the restitution.""
She handed me a thick legal contract.
""When my grandfather built Blackridge, he created a covenant: the facility could never be sold to anyone who didn't hold a master mechanic’s license. Preston tried to bypass that clause through an offshore loophole. Since I am now the majority trustee of the family heritage trust, I am officially separating Blackridge Performance from the commercial motor division. It is becoming an independent heritage restoration and high-performance engineering firm.""
She pointed to the signature line at the bottom of the document.
""I need an executive director and chief engineer, Evan. Someone who respects the machinery. Someone who won't ever compromise on safety. The position comes with a forty percent equity stake, an annual operating budget of twenty million dollars, and full control over every classic car in the collection.""

I stared at her, stunned into silence. ""Vivian... I've been fixing farm trucks and minivans for fifteen years.""
""And last night, you coaxed an experimental eight-hundred-horsepower engine back to life in five minutes and outdrove tactical mercenaries on sheer ice,"" she smiled warmly, placing a hand on my arm. ""You were never just a mechanic, Evan. You were the soul of this place. It's time to come home.""
