Chapter 4 - The Poison Pill

""He already suspects someone might try,"" Vivian said grimly, handing me the wrench. ""That's why he moved the contract signing up to two o'clock this afternoon. If this car triggers an alert, we won't have time to run.""

""Then don't let me slip,"" I said.

The cold brass of the tool felt natural against my palms. It was strange—fifteen years of replacing alternators, rusted brake rotors, and blown head gaskets on farm trucks had roughened my skin, but the muscle memory of extreme precision returned in an instant.

I positioned the pick behind the lower retaining spring. ""Hold the secondary line steady, Vivian. If this hose shifts more than two millimeters, the chemical purge triggers.""

She stepped forward without hesitation, her expensive coat brushing against the greasy fender liner. Her fingers clamped onto the braided stainless-steel hose with surprising strength.

I leaned my weight over the engine, listening to the tiny micro-clicks of the brass fitting as I turned the wrench a fraction of a millimeter at a time. Sweat beaded on my forehead despite the freezing vault.

Click.

Click.

Hisssss.

A sharp puff of inert nitrogen gas escaped the valve. Vivian flinched, but her hands stayed rock steady.

""Almost there,"" I whispered, sliding the pick beneath the shim.

With a soft magnetic click, the brass plate slid free from the manifold. Inside the hollowed cavity of the secondary fuel rail sat an oblong titanium capsule, no larger than a fountain pen, secured by two microscopic hex screws.

I carefully extracted the cylinder and laid it on a clean microfiber cloth.

""Harris, get the decoding deck,"" Vivian ordered, her pulse visibly beating in her throat.

Harris stepped up, unscrewed the end cap of the capsule with a miniature spanner, and pulled out a solid-state storage core encased in military-grade resin. He plugged the drive into Vivian’s laptop.

Lines of green code scrolled frantically across the black screen. Vivian’s software was running an automated decryption key derived from her family’s private trust codes.

After forty agonizing seconds, the screen flashed red, followed by a sudden cascade of unlocked directories.

""Project Chimera,"" Vivian read aloud, her eyes widening in horror as she opened the primary folder. ""My God...""

""What is it?"" I asked, wiping my hands on a shop rag.

""In 2008, Ashford Motor Group was on the verge of bankruptcy during the financial crisis,"" Vivian said, scrolling rapidly through internal corporate memorandums. ""My father wanted to seek a federal bailout. But Preston... Preston went to a shadowy private equity syndicate tied to offshore shell companies. They injected four hundred million dollars into our holding firm. But in exchange, Preston signed a secret collateral agreement.""

She opened a scanned contract bearing Preston Ashford’s unmistakable signature.

""The collateral wasn't stock,"" Vivian continued, her voice shaking with rage. ""It was the patent portfolio for our entire commercial powertrain division—and the physical archive of thirty years of safety testing data. Preston secretly falsified brake-system fail-rates on over half a million consumer vehicles between 2009 and 2012 to prevent recalls that would have triggered the syndicate's takeover clause.""

I felt sick. ""The mismatched ledger pages I found back then...""

""You found the prototype test logs for the hydraulic brake sensors that Preston was actively tampering with,"" Vivian said, turning to look at me with eyes full of sorrow and vindication. ""You weren't blacklisted because you were careless, Evan. You were blacklisted because you were the only mechanic in this entire complex who actually read the raw telemetry data. If you had stayed here another month, you would have realized that three fatal crashes on the Ashford test track were caused by Preston’s falsified software patches.""

Suddenly, the overhead speakers crackled with static.

A high-pitched siren pierced the stillness of the cavernous room. The amber lights instantly turned into a blinding, rhythmic pulse of crimson.

Harris cursed under his breath. ""The security protocol didn't come from the fuel line. Preston just initiated an emergency lockdown from outside. We have multiple vehicles entering the facility courtyard!""

May you like

""How many?"" Vivian snapped, slamming her laptop shut and securing the drive.

""Four SUVs. Vance Tactical strike team,"" Harris reported, drawing his sidearm. ""And Preston Ashford is in the lead vehicle.""
