Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Driveway

Vivian Ashford didn't blink against the freezing Wisconsin wind. Her tailored wool coat remained perfectly still as she leaned closer, her breath forming small clouds in the winter night. ""So? If the sale goes through in January, the physical cars, the blueprints, and every pre-digital archive will be shipped to a private buyer in Geneva. Once that happens, whatever is hidden inside the Coronado will vanish behind sealed foreign vaults forever.""
I crossed my arms, feeling the bitter chill bite through my worn canvas jacket. ""And why should I care if some eccentric billionaire buys an old prototype?""
""Because Preston isn't selling the heritage division for money,"" Vivian said, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. ""Ashford Motor Group is worth billions; selling fifty classic cars is pocket change to us. Preston is selling it to bury something. Two weeks ago, my father had a severe stroke. The moment he went into a coma, Preston assumed interim control of the board and pushed this acquisition forward with aggressive speed. He rushed the inventory audit. That's when I had my personal mechanic pull the Coronado into our private hangar. I wanted to see why my brother was in such a frantic hurry to liquidate our grandfather's pride and joy.""
She tapped the glossy photograph in her hand. ""The shim behind that fuel assembly isn't just an altered part, Evan. It houses a micro-machined titanium capsule. Inside is an encrypted hardware drive from 2009. But to extract that housing without triggering a pressurized chemical purge valve built into the secondary fuel line, you have to know how the assembly was seated. Whoever designed it stamped eleven crosshatch marks on the flange—your exact calling card. Preston set this trap fifteen years ago to ensure that if anyone ever found it, your name would take the fall. Or worse, you were the only one who could open it safely.""
I felt the blood drain from my face. Fifteen years ago, I was just a twenty-three-year-old kid who loved combustion engines. When I found the mismatched ledger pages, I thought it was simple clerical fraud. I never imagined someone had planted an encrypted bomb inside a multi-million-dollar prototype and pinned my personal mark to it.
The porch door creaked open behind me. Lena stepped out onto the top stair, clutching a thick fleece blanket around her shoulders. Her dark eyes, so painfully like Claire's, darted between Vivian's polished leather boots and my greasy work boots.
""Dad?"" Lena's voice cracked slightly in the freezing air. ""The pie is getting cold. Who is she?""
""Just a customer with an emergency, honey,"" I said, keeping my tone steady. ""Go back inside. I'll be in shortly.""
Lena didn't move right away. She gave Vivian a long, cautious look before slipping back into the warmth of the house, leaving the porch light glowing over us.
Vivian turned back to me, her expression softening just enough to reveal the desperate woman underneath the billionaire persona. ""I know what Preston did to you, Evan. He blacklisted you from every automotive firm in the Midwest. He ensured you spent the prime of your youth working out of the back of a rusted pickup truck. I can't undo the fifteen years you lost. But I can give you justice. I have a private jet waiting at Dane County Regional. Come with me to Blackridge tonight. Open the housing. Expose Preston before he signs the transfer papers tomorrow afternoon. If you help me, I will clear your name, fund Lena’s college tuition anywhere in the world, and give you forty percent of Blackridge's restored prototype facility.""

I looked toward the front window, where Lena's silhouette watched from the kitchen. I thought of the endless nights spent shivering under frozen car chassis, the bills piling up, the quiet grief that had haunted this small house since Claire died. For fifteen years, I had believed I was just a casualty of corporate bad luck. Now I learned I had been an unwitting pawn in a ruthless dynastic war.
""I need twenty minutes,"" I told Vivian quietly. ""I'm going to eat Christmas dinner with my daughter. Then we go.""
