Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Boardwalk

The ocean wind whipped violently across the empty Virginia Beach boardwalk as the Suburban pulled into the service alley behind the Grand Cavalier Hotel. Thick fog rolled in off the gray waves, masking the towering concrete towers of the oceanfront. Walter cocked his shotgun in the passenger seat, his weathered face showing zero emotion. ""Paul sent two spotters,"" Walter said, pointing through the mist toward a gray sedan parked near the hotel’s rear loading dock. ""Local muscle. Cheap hires, but dangerous enough with automatic weapons."" Dominic turned to June in the back seat. ""Keep Ellie on the floorboard of this truck. Lock these doors from the inside. Walter and I will clear the building and bring Megan out. No matter what you hear, you do not open these doors until you hear three knocks."" Ellie looked up at him, her large brown eyes bright with innocence despite the darkness surrounding them. ""Are you going to get Mommy?"" she asked. Dominic knelt down, reaching out to tap her tiny red bow gently. ""I'm going to bring your mommy right back to you, Ellie. Just like I promised."" Dominic and Walter stepped out into the freezing coastal drizzle, moving silently through the industrial service entrance of the hotel. Inside, the long fluorescent corridors smelled of bleach, laundry detergent, and industrial steam. Dominic moved with ruthless precision, his Glock drawn and held close to his chest. At the end of the third-floor hallway, two men in matching windbreakers were trying to pry open a heavy steel housekeeping door with a crowbar. ""Hurry up!"" one hissed. ""Paul said if the girl’s mother disappears, Dominic has no leverage to negotiate with the board!"" Dominic didn't issue a warning. He closed the distance in three silent strides, bringing the heavy steel slide of his handgun down across the first man's collarbone with a sickening crunch. The second man spun around, reaching for a holster, but Walter stepped out of the shadows, slamming the butt of his shotgun into the man's ribs, folding him instantly onto the linoleum floor. Dominic kicked their dropped weapons down the laundry chute, then tapped three distinct times on the heavy metal door. ""Megan. It's Dominic. Your mother and daughter are outside."" The deadbolt clicked open slowly. The door swung back to reveal a young woman in a faded blue housekeeping uniform, her eyes red from crying, clutching an iron clothing iron like a weapon. The moment she saw Dominic's calm, steady eyes and Walter standing guard, the iron slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly to the floor. ""Where are they?"" she sobbed, collapsing forward. Dominic caught her by the arms, supporting her weight. ""They're safe. In my car right now. But we have to move fast. Paul is burning down everything in Philadelphia, and if we don't finish this tonight, none of us will ever sleep in peace again."" He guided Megan down the back stairwell, shielding her body with his own. When they burst through the alley doors, June threw open the Suburban door, crying out Megan's name. Ellie leaped from the floorboard directly into her mother’s arms, burying her face into Megan’s shoulder. ""Mommy! Mommy, you're here!"" The reunion was raw and tearful, a tiny pocket of pure love amidst twenty years of underworld violence. Dominic watched them from the drizzle, feeling a profound shift inside his soul. For decades, he had lived for power, for fear, for the cold respect of South River. But looking at three generations of women holding each other in the rain, he realized that power was worthless if it couldn't protect something pure. He closed the door securely, turning back to Walter. ""Take them to Rose’s safehouse in Norfolk,"" Dominic ordered. ""The old beach cottage behind the dunes. Nobody knows that address except me."" Walter frowned. ""And what are you doing?"" Dominic checked his magazine, slamming it back into the grip with a sharp, decisive click. ""I'm taking the late train back to Philadelphia. It's time to attend Paul's victory party.""
