Chapter 10 - The Saltwater Promise

The afternoon sun turned the Virginia Beach coastline into a glittering expanse of diamond-bright water. The roar of the Atlantic Ocean filled the salty air, powerful, timeless, and clean. On a quiet, grassy bluff overlooking the sea, Rose Varrone's simple granite headstone stood surrounded by fresh wildflowers. Dominic stood beside the stone, wearing simple jeans and a white linen shirt, feeling the ocean breeze against his skin. Beside him stood June, Megan, and little Ellie. Walter Bell leaned against a wooden railing nearby, finally at peace, holding an unread crossword puzzle with a contented smile on his weathered face. Dominic reached into his pocket and pulled out the small paper bag he had carried from Philadelphia. Inside were the two pieces of saltwater taffy. He unwrapped the first piece and placed it gently on top of Rose's headstone, pressing his hand against the cool, weathered granite. ""I'm sorry I was late, Grandma,"" Dominic whispered softly. ""I had to make sure someone else's family got home safe first. I think you would have understood."" He turned around to face June and Megan. June stepped forward, pulling a small blue coffee tin from her bag—the tin she had saved five-dollar bills in for seven months. ""Dominic,"" June said, her eyes shining with emotion. ""We don't have much. But Megan and I want to pay you back for the gas, for the car, for saving our lives."" Dominic gently pushed the tin back into June's hands, closing her fingers around it. ""Keep it, June. In fact, you're going to need it to pack your bags."" Megan looked up, confused. ""Pack our bags? For what?"" Dominic pulled a set of polished brass keys from his pocket and handed them to Megan. ""Three miles down this beach, there’s an oceanfront bakery and cafe that’s been looking for a new owner. The deed is fully paid off, registered in June Harper’s name. June bakes the best cookies on the East Coast, and Megan, you’re the head manager. No more cleaning rooms. No more living apart. You two have a home here, right on the water, for the rest of your lives."" Megan gasped, covering her mouth as joyful tears spilled down her cheeks. June broke down completely, pulling Dominic into a fierce, grandmotherly hug that smelled of lavender and fresh sugar. Ellie tugged gently on Dominic's pant leg. ""Mr. Dominic?"" Dominic knelt down to her eye level, smiling warmly. ""Yes, Ellie?"" ""What's that other piece of candy?"" Dominic looked at the second piece of saltwater taffy resting in his palm. For twenty years, he had eaten that second piece alone in bitter silence, mourning a life lost to crime and darkness. He carefully unwrapped the sweet candy and handed it to Ellie. ""It's saltwater taffy,"" Dominic said, his heart completely full. ""The sweetest thing in the world."" Ellie took a bite, her eyes lighting up with delight. ""It's yummy!"" Dominic laughed, a genuine, joyful sound that echoed over the roaring waves. He took Ellie's tiny hand in his, walking down toward the shoreline alongside Megan, June, and Walter. The ocean stretched out endlessly before them, vast, beautiful, and full of tomorrow’s promises."
