Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Shadows

Five miles off the interstate, tucked behind an abandoned textile mill surrounded by overgrown pines, Walter kicked open the rusted metal doors of an unmarked concrete garage. Sitting inside beneath a dusty tarp was a midnight-black, armored Suburban with reinforced bumpers and tinted windows. Walter pulled off the canvas covering and threw the keys to Dominic. ""Clean plates, satellite navigation, and zero electronic tracking,"" Walter said, opening the passenger side. June climbed into the leather back seat, holding Ellie securely on her lap. Her hands were still trembling, her eyes darting nervously around the dim garage. ""Mister,"" June said, her voice shaking with raw maternal instinct, ""I don't know what kind of trouble you run with, but my daughter is waiting at the ocean. She hasn't seen Ellie in seven months. We just wanted to ride the bus. We don't want no part of your money or your enemies."" Dominic looked in the rearview mirror, meeting June's terrified, honest gaze. He reached into his coat and pulled out his wallet, looking at the two pieces of wrapped saltwater taffy resting beside his emergency cash. ""Ma'am, on my grandmother's soul, I swear nobody is going to touch a single hair on your heads. You saved my life today because this little girl spoke up. I am going to make sure you reach Virginia Beach safely, but first, I have to cut the snake's head off before he reaches your family."" Dominic turned the ignition, the heavy V8 engine rumbling to life with a deep, muffled growl. Walter plugged a customized radio scanner into the center console, frequencies cracking as Philadelphia police and underworld chatter collided. Paul had already moved faster than expected. ""Listen to this,"" Walter warned, adjusting the tuner. A harsh voice crackled over the secure South River frequency: Dominic is officially missing in action. Board has voted Paul full authority over all dock operations and bank reserves. Any loyalist refusing to sign over deeds by five o'clock will be removed permanently. And find the girl in the red dress. Marcus says she tipped him off. Dominic's knuckles turned stark white against the steering wheel. Paul was no longer just targeting him; he was actively hunting an innocent grandmother and a four-year-old child to cover his tracks. Dominic pulled out his satellite phone, dialing an old private number he had sworn never to call again. The phone rang twice before a gravelly voice answered: ""Varrone? Word on the street is you're dead on I-95."" ""I'm alive, Frank,"" Dominic said coldly. Frank 'The Hammer' Moretti was the oldest dockmaster in Philadelphia, a man who hated Paul's reckless greed and respected Dominic's strict code of honor. ""Paul has bought off three councilmen and half the warehouse captains,"" Frank warned in a low rasp. ""He’s liquidating your shipping containers right now at Pier 42. He claims you ran off with fifty million from the union pension fund."" ""Assemble the old guard at Pier 42,"" Dominic ordered, his tone freezing the air inside the vehicle. ""Tell them Rose Varrone’s grandson is coming to collect his debt. And Frank... bring every ledger Paul ever signed.""
