Chapter 8 - The Terms of Surrender

The diner was bustling with the sounds of clinking silverware and casual chatter, completely oblivious to the utter ruin occurring in our booth. My mother was silently crying into her napkin, her entire body trembling with the realization that her reign of emotional manipulation had finally reached a stone wall.

""Here are my terms,"" I said, pulling out a document that David had drafted that morning. ""There will be no negotiations. There will be no crying. You accept every single condition, or David calls the district attorney before we leave this parking lot.""

Dad nodded frantically, clutching Mom's arm. ""Anything, Claire. Name it.""

""First,"" I said, pointing at Nick. ""You will surrender the title to the late-model SUV that was purchased with Tyler’s trust money. It will be sold, and every penny of proceeds will be deposited into a new, locked trust fund administered solely by David's firm. Second, you will sign a legally binding confession of judgment for the remaining balance of the stolen funds, with an eight-percent annual interest penalty, payable over the next ten years.""

Nick nodded numbly, swallowing hard. ""I'll do it. I'll sign it.""

""Third,"" I turned my gaze toward my parents. ""You will immediately execute a quitclaim deed transferring your remaining equity in the suburban house to me. You will be allowed to live there for ninety days rent-free while you find a modest apartment that Dad's pension can actually afford. When the ninety days are up, the house will be sold, and the equity will replenish the remainder of Tyler’s trust and cover my legal fees.""

""You're taking our house?!"" Mom gasped, her voice shrill with horror. ""We’ve lived there for twenty years! Where are we supposed to go?!""

""You should have thought about where you were going to live before you stole a child's future, Evelyn,"" I said, refusing to call her Mom anymore. ""You wanted to live beyond your means on my dime. That fantasy is over. You will live on what Dad earns, and not a single dollar more.""

""And finally,"" I added, looking at all three of them. ""You will sign a mutual non-harassment and restraining agreement. You are never to contact me, call me, email me, or show up at my home or workplace ever again. And if you ever come within five hundred feet of Tyler, if you ever look at him, speak to him, or try to reach him through third parties, the criminal charges will be filed immediately without warning. To you, Tyler and I no longer exist. We are strangers. Exactly like you wanted us to be on Christmas morning.""

Mom stared at the papers, her tears smudging the ink on the agreement. For the first time in her life, she had no leverage. No guilt trips. No tears that could soften the blow.

With trembling hands, Nick picked up the pen and signed his name on every dotted line. Dad took the pen next, his signature shaky and broken. Finally, Mom signed, letting out a ragged sob as she pushed the paperwork back toward David.

David carefully inspected each signature, closed his briefcase, and nodded to me.

""Everything is in order, Claire.""

I stood up from the booth, pulling my coat around my shoulders. I looked down at the three people who had spent my entire life taking everything I had to offer while giving nothing but conditional affection in return.

May you like

""Merry Christmas,"" I said softly.

Then I turned and walked out the door, leaving them sitting in the ruins of their own greed.
