Chapter 7 - The Confrontation at the Diner

Instead of having the sheriff serve the felony warrants immediately, I agreed to meet my parents and Nick one last time on neutral ground. We met at a crowded diner on the edge of town, where the presence of dozens of witnesses would keep their volatile tempers somewhat in check.

I arrived with David Miller sitting silently beside me in a sharp dark suit, a thick leather briefcase resting on his knees.

My mother, father, and Nick were already sitting in a booth in the corner. Nick looked haggard, with dark circles under his bloodshot eyes and stubble across his jaw. Mom was wearing a thick scarf, her arms crossed defensively, while Dad kept tapping his fingers nervously against the laminate table.

""You brought a lawyer to a family meeting?"" Dad scoffed the moment we sat down. ""You really have lost your mind, Claire. We are your family! You don't bring attorneys into family matters!""

""You brought this attorney into our family matters the second you walked into my corporate office and tried to destroy my career, Dad,"" I said evenly. ""Now shut your mouth and listen, because you have about five minutes before your lives change permanently.""

""Listen here, you ungrateful—"" Nick started, leaning over the table with his teeth bared.

David Miller didn't say a word. He simply popped the brass latches of his briefcase open, pulled out a thick stack of bank ledgers stamped with the seal of the county prosecutor's office, and slid them across the table.

Nick glanced down at the top page. The color drained from his face so fast it looked like he was about to vomit.

""What... what is this?"" Mom asked, squinting through her reading glasses at the paperwork.

""That,"" David stated in a crisp, chilling courtroom voice, ""is the documented proof of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars systematically embezzled from Tyler Davis's educational trust fund. Complete with forged signatures, wire transfer tracking numbers, and deposit receipts showing the funds landing directly into Nick Davis's personal account.""

Mom’s hands began to shake uncontrollably. She dropped the papers as if they were burning her fingers. ""I... I was managing family assets! I had the right to reallocate funds during emergencies!""

""You had no such right, Mrs. Davis,"" David replied coldly. ""You committed grand theft of a minor’s trust. You committed wire fraud. And your son Nick committed money laundering. The criminal complaint is fully drafted and sitting on the desk of Assistant District Attorney Vance. He is currently waiting for my phone call to submit it to a judge for immediate arrest warrants.""

""Claire... please,"" Dad whispered, his voice cracking completely. All of his arrogant bluster evaporated into thin air. He looked at his wife, then at Nick, realizing the catastrophe they were facing. ""You can't send your own mother and brother to prison. It would kill your mother. It would ruin Nick's life forever.""

""Nick ruined his own life, Dad,"" I said, leaning in close so my voice hit them like cold steel. ""And Mom helped him do it every step of the way. You stole from my child. You took the money my grandmother left for his future and you pissed it away on vacations and sports betting. And then, when my son stood on your porch with gifts he bought with his own allowance, you slammed the door in his face and told him he was an outsider.""

""Claire, I'm sorry!"" Nick suddenly choked out, tears finally breaking through his arrogant facade. He reached across the table, trying to grab my hand, but David blocked him with a firm arm. ""I'm so sorry! I'll pay it back! Every single penny! Just don't send me to prison! My kids need a father!""

""Your kids need a father who works an honest job and doesn't steal from their little cousin,"" I answered.
