Chapter 4 - The Pressure Mounts

The peace lasted exactly forty-eight hours. By Monday morning, the fallout of cutting off the financial pipeline had turned from frantic texts into an all-out family war.

I woke up early, made pancakes with whipped cream and strawberries for Tyler, and spent the morning playing the board games he had opened on Christmas Eve before my sudden hospital trip. His smile was back, though every now and then, his eyes would drift toward the window, looking for ghosts that weren't there.

At eleven o'clock, the doorbell rang.

I peered through the peephole and saw Amanda standing on my porch, wrapped in an oversized puffer jacket, holding a paper coffee cup. Her face looked pale and exhausted. I hesitated for a moment before unlocking the deadbolt and cracking the door open just enough to speak.

""Amanda. What are you doing here?""

""Claire, please,"" Amanda begged, her voice shaky. ""Can I just have five minutes? Just you and me. No Nick, no your parents. Just two mothers talking.""

I looked past her to make sure Nick wasn't lurking in the driveway. The street was empty. I sighed and opened the door, gesturing for her to step into the foyer, though I didn't invite her further into the house.

""Tyler is playing in his room,"" I said coolly, crossing my arms. ""Say what you came to say.""

Amanda swallowed hard, tears welling in her eyes. ""The landlord gave us a five-day notice to pay or quit this morning. The rent was due on the first, and without your corporate account on file, they want first, last, and a full security deposit from Nick because of his terrible credit score. We don't have it, Claire. We don't have five hundred dollars, let alone nine thousand.""

""And where did all the money Nick supposedly made this year go, Amanda?"" I asked bluntly. ""Because according to Mom, Nick was working on high-level corporate deals. According to you, you were looking at buying a vacation home.""

Amanda looked down, shame burning hot on her cheeks. ""It was all a lie. Nick hasn't worked a real job in fourteen months. He spent the last of our savings on high-stakes online sports betting and trying to launch some crypto startup that crashed. Your mother knew. She told him not to worry, that as long as she played on your guilt, you would always write the checks.""

Hearing it confirmed out loud didn't surprise me, but the sheer callousness of the scheme still took my breath away. ""Your mother-in-law literally weaponized my love for your children to fund Nick's laziness. And on Christmas morning, she looked at my son—a child who had saved his allowance to buy your family gifts—and called him an outsider.""

""I didn't know she was going to do that, Claire! I swear to God I didn't!"" Amanda cried, grabbing my sleeve in desperation. ""Evelyn told us Tyler wasn't coming because you were in the hospital! She told us you sent a message saying you wanted a private Christmas. When Tyler showed up, she panicked because she thought you were sending him to spy on us! She slammed the door before Nick or I even knew who was outside!""

I stared at her, feeling a cold fury wrap around my heart. ""And when Tyler stood there in the living room, crying, holding those presents? What did you do, Amanda? What did Nick do? You stood there and watched my parents insult my child. Not one of you stepped up. Not one of you told Evelyn she was wrong.""

Amanda opened her mouth, but no words came out. The truth was ugly, and neither of us could dress it up.

""I feel for your children, Amanda,"" I said quietly, reaching out and gently removing her hand from my jacket. ""I truly do. But I am not lighting my own son on fire to keep your husband warm. You need to take your kids, pack your bags, and go stay with your parents. Let Nick face the consequences of his own choices for once in his pathetic life.""
