Chapter 4 - What June Left Behind

An hour later, Gabriel’s armored convoy pulled up directly in front of the historic Charleston Merchant Bank. Flanked by Gabriel and two imposing security guards, Nora walked through the towering bronze doors with her head held high. The bank manager, a man who had previously dismissed Nora when she came asking about her mother's accounts years ago, hurried across the lobby, his face pale and sweating at the sight of Gabriel Varrone.

""Mr. Varrone! An honor, sir! How may we assist you today?"" the manager stammered, bowing nervously.

""You won't be assisting me, Miller,"" Gabriel replied coldly. ""You will be assisting Miss Nora Bellamy, the rightful and sole owner of Vault 404. And you will ensure that not a single soul interrupts us.""

Led down into the subterranean vault lined with reinforced steel, Nora stood before a heavy brass box marked with her mother’s initials. The electronic scanner blinked to life. Nora placed her palm against the glass plate and keyed in six digits: 0-9-1-4-0-5.

A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the vault. The door swung open.

Inside lay three thick leather ledgers, a black velvet jewelry box, and a sealed manila envelope marked For My Nora. Gabriel stepped back respectfully, giving her privacy.

With trembling fingers, Nora broke the wax seal on the envelope and pulled out her mother's letter.

My darling girl, the elegant handwriting read. If you are reading this, I have left you too soon. I know the world can be cruel to gentle souls, and I know your father’s new wife has eyes filled with greed. Do not let them dim your light. In this box is the deed to our family building on King Street, completely paid off. There are bearer bonds worth two million dollars to fund your own fashion house, and the master ledger proving every cent of the business belongs to you. But most importantly, there are audio tapes of Celeste’s first meeting with our accountant, proving she attempted to embezzle funds while I was in chemotherapy. Fight for what is yours, my brave little wren. You are born to create, not to serve.

Nora pressed the letter to her chest as tears spilled silently down her cheeks. She was not a penniless orphan surviving on Celeste's scraps. She was the rightful heir to an empire of art and heritage.

Beneath the letter, the velvet box opened to reveal a breathtaking diamond and sapphire brooch shaped like a wren in mid-flight, its eye sparkling with an uncut golden topaz.

Gabriel stepped forward, his gaze soft as he looked at the brooch. ""Your mother never lost faith in you, Nora. Now, it's time we show Celeste Bellamy what happens when you steal from a dead woman's daughter.""
