Chapter 6 - When Reality Bites

Three weeks after the gala, the cracks in Julian Vance’s empire widened into open chasms. The absence of my strategic oversight at his company, paired with his mounting personal distraction, culminated in a catastrophic logistical disaster on the Riverside Tower project.
Julian sat in his conference room at Vance Property Group, surrounded by five senior structural engineers and his frantic legal team. The concrete supplier had delivered substandard grade mix to the top twelve floors of the high-rise, failing safety inspections and prompting the Department of Buildings to issue a full stop-work order on the hundred-and-fifty-million-dollar development.
""How the hell did this slip past quality control?"" Julian roared, slamming his palms onto the glass conference table. ""We have three separate sign-offs required for structural pour schedules!""
The head project manager, a veteran builder named Henderson who had worked with us for ten years, looked at Julian with cold defiance. ""The sign-off emails were routed to Mrs. Vance’s executive desk back in August, Mr. Vance. When she stepped down as the institutional liaison, those verification protocols were assigned to your executive assistant’s intake basket.""
Julian froze. His gaze snapped toward the end of the table where Chloe sat, trembling behind an open laptop, her eyes rimmed with red.
""Chloe,"" Julian’s voice dropped to a terrifying whisper. ""Did you verify the certification stamps on the Riverside concrete invoices?""
""I... I thought they were routine delivery slips,"" Chloe choked out, tears instantly spilling down her cheeks. ""There were over four hundred pages in that PDF packet! You told me to clear your desk of non-urgent vendor notices so you could focus on the Hudson Yards bid! I didn't know the supplier was under state investigation!""
""You didn't know?"" Julian’s voice cracked with pure fury. ""Your entire job was to flag regulatory discrepancies! That is why you are paid a six-figure executive salary!""
""I am an assistant!"" Chloe cried out, standing up so abruptly that her chair tipped backward onto the carpet. ""You hired me because I made the office feel lighter! You took me to lunch, you told me I was charming, and you told me not to worry about the boring administrative details! Now every time something goes wrong, you look at me like you hate me! I am not your wife, Julian! I can't read your mind, and I can't run a multi-million-dollar real estate company for you!""
She grabbed her designer purse—a gift Julian had bought her for her birthday two months ago—and bolted out of the boardroom, sobbing openly in front of the entire senior staff.
The silence in the room was absolute.
Henderson sighed heavily, gathering his architectural blueprints with slow, deliberate movements. ""Claire used to review every single vendor certification personally, Julian. She caught three fraudulent supply rings back in 2022 before the state even knew what happened. She worked until two in the morning while you were sleeping so that our sites would never fail an OSHA audit. You traded an iron shield for a cheap bouquet of flowers. We’re looking at an eighteen-million-dollar demolition penalty to replace those upper decks. Good luck with the bank.""
The engineers filed out one by one, leaving Julian entirely alone in the cavernous, glass-walled room.
He buried his face in his hands, the silence of the empty office pressing down upon his chest like a slab of wet cement. He remembered Claire sitting on the carpet of their tiny Queens apartment, her fingers stained with blue ink, calculating mortgage amortization tables on scrap paper while he slept exhausted on their second-hand sofa. She had shielded him from every failure, absorbed every blow, and carried the invisible burdens of his ambition on her back without ever asking for applause.
And he had repaid her by finding her strength boring.

His phone buzzed. It was an automated calendar reminder that Claire had programmed into his account three years ago: Noah’s 8th Birthday Party - Saturday, 2:00 PM, Chelsea Piers.
Julian looked at the notification, a jagged, agonizing sob tearing through his throat as the realization settled deep into his bones: he hadn't just lost a brilliant business partner. He had thrown away the only person who had ever truly loved him for who he was, long before he had a single dollar to his name.
