Chapter 15 - The Retribution of Apex

The fallout from the podcast broadcast was instantaneous and devastating—not for us, but for those who had conspired in the dark. Within forty-eight hours, the Manhattan District Attorney formally issued an indictment against Chloe Evans for commercial bribery and corporate espionage. The news made the front page of the Wall Street Journal, completely vindicating Vance Property Group’s structural inspections and restoring investor confidence overnight.

However, a cornered beast is always the most dangerous.

Apex Construction’s chief executive, Victor Sterling—an estranged distant cousin of my own legal counsel, David Sterling—saw his multi-million-dollar scheme crumbling before his eyes. He had shorted Vance Property Group’s commercial debt, anticipating that the Riverside project stop-work order would trigger an irreversible corporate bankruptcy. Now, with the city reissuing all necessary construction permits and Sterling-Hayes Capital underwriting the remaining phases, Victor faced total financial annihilation.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when I received a personal summons from the city zoning board. A sudden dispute had arisen regarding the easement rights for our newly announced affordable housing development in Queens—the passion project Julian had dedicated his restructured firm to building.

Julian was on-site in Long Island City, so I took our company sedan with our trusted driver, Thomas, to inspect the city archives downtown. As the car turned onto a quieter commercial bypass near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, a heavy commercial flatbed truck abruptly swerved across the double yellow lines, clipping our front bumper with sickening force.

The screech of tearing metal and the explosive pop of airbags shattered the rainy afternoon. My head snapped violently to the side, pain radiating across my temple as the world spun into a blur of gray smoke and shattered glass.

"Claire!" Thomas’s groaning voice cut through the ringing in my ears. He was bleeding from a cut on his forehead, struggling against his jammed seatbelt. "Stay down! Don't move!"

Outside the cracked window, through the sheet of falling rain, I saw two men in industrial rain slickers approaching our vehicle from a dark SUV idling behind the truck. One of them held a crowbar, his face obscured by a heavy woolen mask. This was no traffic accident; this was a calculated intimidation hit designed to stall our municipal filing before the five o'clock deadline.

Adrenaline surged through my veins, incinerating the lingering shock of the impact. I reached into my leather tote bag, retrieved my phone, and hit the emergency speed-dial key linked directly to Julian’s personal line and private security dispatch.

"Claire?" Julian’s voice answered instantly, fraught with immediate panic. "Where are you? Your GPS beacon just signaled a catastrophic collision impact!"

"Brooklyn Navy Yard, industrial corridor on Flushing Avenue," I spoke quickly, keeping my voice low and steady despite the blood trickling down my cheek. "Victor Sterling sent his cleanup crew. They staged a truck collision. Thomas is injured, and two men are attempting to force the doors."

Before Julian could answer, the glass of the rear passenger window shattered inward with an explosive crash.
