Chapter 9 - The Generous Heart

Over the next three hours, Naomi assisted the surgical team with the incoming accident victims, organizing blood transfers, consoling families in the waiting room, and coordinating post-operative recovery beds. Julian remained in the waiting lounge the entire time, observing the tireless dedication of the underpaid medical staff and the desperate relief on parents' faces when Naomi emerged with positive updates.
By seven o'clock that evening, the emergency crisis had passed. All three pediatric accident victims were out of surgery and resting in stable condition.
Naomi walked out into the main lobby, her shoulders sagging with profound exhaustion. She found Julian sitting on a modest vinyl chair, working quietly on his tablet.
“Julian,” she said softly, approaching him. “You’re still here? You should have gone home hours ago.”
Julian stood up, closing his tablet, and wrapped her in a warm, protective embrace. “I told you, Naomi. Wherever you are is where I belong.”
He looked around the dated hospital lobby. The paint on the walls was peeling near the corners; several waiting room chairs had torn upholstery; and the pediatric play corner had only a handful of worn-out plastic toys.
“Naomi,” Julian asked, holding her hands. “How much does this pediatric department need to fully modernize its trauma wing and provide free care for families without insurance?”
Naomi blinked, stunned by the sudden question. “Julian, that would cost millions. The foundation has been trying to raise funds for a new surgical wing for over five years.”
Julian smiled gently. “Consider it done. Tomorrow morning, Hartwell Capital will issue a fifty-million-dollar endowment directly to Lakeshore Children’s Hospital. The new pediatric center will bear your mother’s name: The Evelyn Carter Children’s Pavilion.”
Naomi stared at him, tears immediately spilling over her eyelashes. She covered her mouth, utterly overwhelmed by the magnitude of his generosity.
“Julian... you can’t be serious... fifty million dollars?”
May you like
“I have never been more serious in my life,” Julian murmured, wiping away her tears with his thumbs. “Your mother raised a woman who heals this world. Her legacy deserves to be carved into stone, where no one can ever look down on it again.”
Naomi threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his chest, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy. For years, she had carried the grief of losing her mother while battling financial hardships alone. Now, not only was she loved beyond measure, but countless sick children would receive life-saving care in her mother's honor.
