Chapter 3 - The Cold Truth

Julian pulled back slightly, his eyes narrowing as he read the fatigue and quiet indignation in Naomi’s expression. He knew his fiancée better than anyone. Naomi never complained about long hours, difficult patients, or minor inconveniences. If she was upset, something egregious had taken place.
“Why not?” Julian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous, measured register that made his accompanying aides instinctively take a step back. “Was there an issue with the appointment?”
Before Naomi could answer, Vanessa rushed forward, her face alternating between ghostly white and bright crimson. Her mind was spinning in chaotic terror as she tried to assemble the pieces of the catastrophic puzzle in front of her.
The tired nurse.
The black card.
The three o’clock private booking.
The name: Naomi Carter.
“Mr... Mr. Hartwell,” Vanessa stammered, her voice shaking violently. “I... there was a profound misunderstanding. An administrative error. The receptionist did not clarify that Ms. Carter was accompanied by... that is, affiliated with your family.”
Naomi turned to face Vanessa. “I didn’t need to be affiliated with Julian to receive basic courtesy. I gave you my name. I showed you the confirmation. I handed you my card.”
Julian’s gaze shifted to Vanessa. The warmth that had been in his eyes when looking at Naomi was entirely gone, replaced by a chilling, razor-sharp focus that made Vanessa feel completely exposed.
“You questioned her card?” Julian asked, the syllables falling like drops of liquid nitrogen.
Vanessa swallowed hard, struggling to breathe. “She... she walked in without identification, wearing casual attire, and began handling the three-hundred-thousand-dollar hand-beaded gown on the main mannequin. As director, I have strict mandates to protect high-value inventory from damage or potential theft.”
“And when I asked her to run the card,” Naomi added calmly, “she called it a bus pass. When it cleared, she accused me of using a stolen clone and threatened to have building security drag me out into the street.”
A collective gasp echoed across the salon. The elderly woman on the sofa shook her head in disgust. “Appalling,” she said loudly enough for everyone to hear. “Absolutely disgraceful behavior.”
Julian looked at the floor behind the desk, then back to Vanessa. “Is this true?”
“Mr. Hartwell, please understand the environment of a luxury boutique!” Vanessa pleaded, clasping her hands together in desperation. “We cater to dignitaries, celebrities, and old-money families. We have protocol! If Ms. Carter had simply stated she was your fiancée, we would have rolled out the red carpet, served Dom Pérignon, and closed the boutique to the public immediately!”
“That is precisely the problem, isn't it?” Julian said, stepping closer to Vanessa until the towering presence of the billionaire cast a shadow over her. “My fiancée doesn't broadcast her status because she believes every human being deserves respect, regardless of what they wear or how much money sits in their bank account. She spent her morning holding the hand of a sick child in an ICU. She arrived here exhausted, looking for a wedding dress to celebrate our union. And you treated her like trash simply because she wasn't wearing a designer label.”
“I’m sorry!” Vanessa gasped, tears of panic finally breaking through her heavy mascara. “I am so deeply sorry, Ms. Carter! Please, let me personally assist you. The entire salon is yours. Any gown you desire, at a fifty percent courtesy discount—”
“Fifty percent?” Naomi interrupted, her voice clear and resonant. “You told me five minutes ago that if Julian Hartwell’s bride walked in, she could sleep in that dress. But anyone else had to prove they weren't a criminal. I don't want your discount. And I certainly don't want a dress handed to me by someone who despises everyday working people.”
Julian turned to the older gentleman standing quietly behind him with the architectural folder.
“Arthur,” Julian said without looking back.
“Yes, Mr. Hartwell?” the man responded instantly.
