Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Schoolyard

Three weeks into November, the peaceful rhythm of the estate was violently shattered.
Sophie had begun attending a prestigious private academy in Westchester, escorted every morning by two of Dante’s most trusted plainclothes security officers, Leo and Sal. Dante had personally vetted the school, ensuring its perimeter was secure and discreetly monitored.
On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, as the bell rang dismissing the kindergarten classes, Leo and Sal stood near the pickup curb beside their unmarked black sedan. Dozens of parents and uniformed children bustled through the iron gates under the supervision of crossing guards.
Across the street, parked behind a delivery van, sat a nondescript gray cargo van with tinted windows. Inside were three men loyal to Don Calvini’s exiled syndicate—desperate remnants of the organization seeking vengeance for the total destruction of their empire.
“That’s the kid,” the driver growled, racking the slide of a silenced automatic pistol. “The maid’s daughter. The boss said Dante treats her like his own flesh and blood. We grab the girl, we dictate the terms of the waterfront surrender.”
As Sophie walked out holding her teacher’s hand, clutching her little backpack, a sudden commotion erupted near the front gate. A smoke canister was kicked across the sidewalk, hissing thick, blinding white smoke that instantly caused dozens of parents and children to scream in sheer panic.
Leo and Sal reacted immediately, drawing their weapons and moving toward Sophie, but two men in dark masks surged through the smoke, firing tasers that struck Leo in the neck, dropping him to the pavement.
Sal managed to grab Sophie by her backpack, shielding her tiny body with his broad frame, but the second attacker slammed a heavy iron crowbar into Sal’s ribs, sending him crashing into the ornamental fence.
Sophie fell to the concrete, her backpack tearing open. Her books, colored pencils, and beloved black notebook spilled across the blood-stained sidewalk.
The masked man lunged forward, his heavy leather-gloved hand reaching for Sophie’s collar. “Gotcha, you little brat!”
Sophie screamed, but instead of freezing, she remembered the lesson Dante had whispered to her during their morning walks in the rose garden: ‘Never surrender to a wolf, Sophie. Make noise. Fight with everything you have.’
Sophie grabbed the sharp metal barrel of her thermos and drove it with all her strength directly into the attacker’s eye socket through the eyehole of his mask.
The man shrieked in agony, clutching his face as blood poured between his fingers.
The two-second delay was all Sal needed. Rising from the ground despite three cracked ribs, Sal drew his sidearm and fired three suppressed rounds into the center chest of the attacker, dropping him instantly to the curb.

Sirens wailed in the near distance as police cruisers converged on the smoke-filled street. The gray van peeled its tires, speeding away into the Westchester suburbs.
Sal scooped the sobbing, terrified little girl into his arms, retrieving her torn notebook from the blood-slicked concrete, and dove into the armored sedan. Within thirty seconds, the radio in Dante’s Hudson Valley office was screaming with an emergency priority code: “Red Alpha! Breach at the school! The girl is safe, but they tried to take her!”
