Chapter 8 - The Price Of Treason

The east harbor warehouse smelled of salt water, diesel exhaust, and damp timber. Massive steel shipping containers were stacked three stories high, casting deep, ominous shadows across the concrete floor. Salvatore Valetti stood beside an open wooden crate of imported luxury watches, smoking a fat cigar, laughing with two of his personal bodyguards. He was a stocky man in his late fifties with slicked-back gray hair and a diamond pinky ring that caught the harsh fluorescent light.

The warehouse roll-up door rattled loudly, rising slowly to reveal Dante Moretti standing in the gray daylight, flanked only by Marco. Dante wore his long black wool trench coat, his hands resting casually inside his pockets, his posture relaxed yet radiating an aura of absolute dominance that made Salvatore's bodyguards instantly freeze.

""Dante!"" Salvatore called out, forcing a hearty smile that failed to mask the sudden darting of his eyes toward the exits. ""You didn't tell me you were coming down to inspect the crates yourself. I would have had proper espresso brought down from the cafe.""

Dante walked slowly across the vast concrete expanse, his leather shoes echoing like gunshots against the walls. He stopped five feet from Salvatore, looking at the older man with eyes as cold as an Arctic winter.

""Julian Rossi,"" Dante said softly.

The smile on Salvatore's face vanished, replaced by an ugly, defensive twitch of his jaw. ""Julian? That dead junkie from Queens? What about him?""

""You funded Mickey Vane's loans,"" Dante stated, unhurried, pulling a crisp linen handkerchief from his pocket and slowly wiping his fingers. ""You provided the address of my estate. You watched a mother and her six-year-old child being terrorized within three hundred yards of my breakfast table, waiting to see if my security would crack so you could challenge my seat at the commission.""

Salvatore took a hurried step back, his hand drifting instinctively toward his waistband. ""Dante, listen to me, you're making a mistake! It was just business! Julian owed money across three boroughs, it had nothing to do with you—""

Before Salvatore's fingers could touch the grip of his pistol, Marco moved with terrifying speed. A single crack echoed through the warehouse as Marco's heavy fist slammed across Salvatore's jaw, sending the older man crashing violently onto the wooden crates. Salvatore's two bodyguards reached for their weapons, but the distinctive red laser dots of three sniper rifles instantly appeared on their chests from the darkness of the upper catwalks. Both men raised their hands in terror and dropped their sidearms to the concrete floor.

Dante knelt beside the groaning underboss, who spat blood onto the splintered wood. Dante reached out, grabbed Salvatore by his silk necktie, and pulled him forward until their faces were inches apart.

""You brought violence toward a child under my roof, Salvatore,"" Dante whispered, his voice vibrating with lethal authority. ""My father would have had you fed to the harbor crabs for breakfast. But I will show you the exact mercy you showed that little girl.""

Dante let go of the tie and stood up, looking over at Marco. ""Strip him of his territories, his union rights, and his assets. Put him on a cargo ship heading for South America tonight. If his foot ever touches North American soil again, bury him where he lands.""

Salvatore gasped for breath, clutching his bruised ribs, realizing that while his criminal empire had just been erased in sixty seconds, he was walking away with his life. ""Dante... please...""

""Go,"" Dante said coldly, turning his back on the broken traitor. ""I have a family dinner to attend.""
