Chapter 7 - A Trap In The Shadows

Morning mist rolled off the sound, wrapping the Moretti mansion in a shroud of white cotton. At six-fifty-five, Marco stood beside the towering wrought-iron gates, flanked by four armed security guards dressed in discreet dark overcoats. Exactly as commanded, a beat-up black sedan pulled onto the gravel shoulder outside the perimeter. Mickey Vane stepped out, his face the color of cold lard, sweating profusely despite the crisp autumn morning. He carried a heavy manila envelope clutched to his chest with trembling fingers.
Mickey dropped to both knees in the gravel just outside the threshold, holding the envelope above his head like an offering to a wrathful pagan deity. Marco stepped forward, took the envelope, opened the clasp, and verified every single signed promissory note Julian Rossi had ever signed.
""All of them are here,"" Marco said coldly, looking down at the groveling thug. ""Now get in your car and leave.""
""Tell Mr. Moretti... tell him I have nothing but respect for the family,"" Mickey pleaded, scrambling backward into the driver's seat. ""Total respect!""
The sedan sped away, throwing gravel into the roadside ditches. Marco watched it disappear down the winding country road, then keyed his two-way radio. ""Boss, the papers are secured. But we have a secondary problem.""
Inside the study, Dante held the radio receiver to his ear. ""Speak.""
""Mickey wasn't acting alone on the financing,"" Marco reported grimly. ""Julian's original marker was backed by Salvatore Valetti. That's why Mickey had the balls to push so hard. Salvatore knew Anna was working here four months ago. He set this up as a test to see if you were paying attention to household security.""
Dante's eyes narrowed. Salvatore Valetti was a senior underboss in Dante's own syndicate, a greedy, aging conspirator who had been whispering in dark corners about Dante's ""softening"" ever since Dante's wife had passed away eight years ago. Salvatore had intentionally allowed a loan shark to terrorize a scullery maid inside Dante's estate to gauge the Don's alertness and locate blind spots in the perimeter guard.
""Where is Salvatore now?"" Dante asked, his voice chillingly composed.
""He just arrived at the east harbor warehouse for the morning inventory review,"" Marco replied. ""He thinks everything is proceeding according to his schedule.""
""Take a car,"" Dante commanded. ""Bring Anna and Sophie to the safe suite in the west wing. Double the guards on every access road. I am going to the harbor.""
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, Anna was busy kneading fresh dough for the evening pastries. Sophie sat nearby on a high stool, watching her mother with wide, peaceful eyes. For the first time in two years, Anna's hands were not shaking. The crushing weight on her chest had evaporated like morning frost under a bright sun. But as the door swung open and three heavily armed security men entered with stern expressions, Anna's heart seized once more.
""Mrs. Rossi,"" the lead guard stated respectfully, lowering his head. ""Mr. Moretti has ordered you and your daughter to relocate to the master family quarters immediately. There is a security sweep underway.""

""Is... is it the loan sharks again?"" Anna gasped, pulling Sophie down from the stool and wrapping her arms around the girl's small shoulders.
""No, ma'am,"" the guard answered firmly. ""The sharks are dealt with. Mr. Moretti is now handling the fisherman.""
